I am one of the holdouts running Win XP. Considering the change will cost me about 10K a year for proprietary software that will be compatible with a new system after I leave XP, not only am I in no hurry, I want something more dependable and easier to use. I don't want to 'share' everything with the planet, sync to a smartphone, post anything on fecebook, or any of the rest of that crap, I just want a functional computer for work.
Min requirements for W95 were a 486 DX (P90 Recommended) and 8 MB of RAM (12 GB Recommended)
I can only imagine how bloated W10 is and what the min spec requirements are to run it.
DOS 4 SUCKS!!! 3.3 is TEH BEST!!
I’m running WXP SP3 and can synch to my smartphone with a USB cable and do most of everything I can do on the latest OS from Windows.
I have a FB account that I need for work for testing software compatibility, along with a twitter account for the same reason but personally don’t use them, although they work fine with XP.
As mentioned earlier, I use Avast AV, Malwarebytes and “Hit Man Pro” and my PC is squeaky clean and also warns me if a web page might by fishy and if a file download might have Malware or a Virus.
Also running Firefox as my Browser with Ad Block Pro, Lightbeam and No Script.
Again, zero issues even though XP is no longer supported by Windows.
The XP UI is simple and intuitive, unlike some of the later iterations of Windows.
Windows 8 forced you to use a touch-friendly menu for all your apps
This writer sounds like someone who knows nothing about tweaking/personalizing Windows - A single free app would have given him his precious start menu back. And Win8.1 does that natively.
digital assistant Cortana
Cortana is very useful on my Lumia 1020. We'll see if conversing with my laptop works for me.
option to stream games from your Xbox
Looking forward to trying this out - playing on my XboxOne without having to sit in the game room. I'll be running some Halo:MCC Spartan Ops missions (and maybe Halo 5 by then) on my laptop. Just wish it was a Surface 3 i7 tablet. *drool*
Try http://www.classicshell.net/ and you will have your icons back.
Here is an article on it. I have Windows 7 home premium, so I should be able to get it free - though I’ve had this computer since 2011.

Which is why I like it. In a fast-paced work environment, I can get things done without looking through a pile of pictures. Even MS Excel lost a lot imho when commands which were just drop down verbal menus became more visually complex.

to adjust the interleave on your RLL hard disk.
I agree. 3.3 hit the sweet spot for memory footprint and power. In the MS post 3.11 GUI world it was Windows 2000.
I do.
I was amazed at the time to learn there were utilities in ROM between 640k and 1 Meg. A genius at work put me on to this and I was able to get a big performance increase by increasing the interleave on my whiz bang 10 Meg drive. All the storage ANYONE should ever need!
I have a reel of tape from an early Univac computer. The tape is solid metal, nickel-plated phosphor bronze, 1/2 inch wide.

Yikes-—it would make a helluva doorstop.
.
I don’t know.
This hasn’t been an issue w/me.
I hear that DOS 5.0 is mighty fine. G'head, be a rebel. Embrace the new(ish).
Been running Win. 10 Tech. Preview for months under heavy load (about 200 tabs open on two browsers, a dozen docs, etc.) , and it has minor improvements. Seem to use less ram for one. With Classic Shell, which is also an improvement on this, then one would see even less difference.
Yet as the upgrade is sppsd to be free, then you would get a longer service life.
If you want, see my Windows 8 pro review (upgrade XP to Windows 8 with Classic Shell ) and on the Window 10 preview .
Here is what I don't like about Windows 10 - That old fashioned Left Column List of Programs. It is a waste of space and, unless it can be disabled, a deal killer for me. I like the Metro Start Menu. I use the Metro for less used programs in combination with the Desktop Taskbar for most used programs. For me that is a perfect combination.
Questions for you:
Can that Old Fashioned List of Programs be disabled in Windows 10?
Is there still a Taskbar on the Desktop?
