TRS-DOS scares me, too futuristic.
Stick with the Level 1 BASIC. Only two string variables, no arrays, and two error messages (WHAT? and HOW?)
When you get good you can move up to Level II BASIC and use PEEK and POKE, and even invoke Z-80 Assembly subroutines.
