I found an old used paperback - How to Know North American Mammals.

It was by Sanderson.

It was not cryptozoology, but a legitimate book on mammals He was apparently an actual zoologist or naturalist of some sort.

I don't know I'd he just went nutty or the lonnytune books just sold better. Maybe a combination of both.

From what I understand, he started out as a serious scientist, but toward his later years he gained a lot of fame from this kind of thing. It always seemed he believed what he was writing.
