I visited the bridge in 1975 in Lake Havasu City when the numbers were still fresh on the stones. That was four years after construction was completed. It was the strangest thing seeing that beautiful bridge in the desert. It was a stroke of genius by the developer to buy and build the bridge — what was a remote, dusty backwater (somtomspeak) really took off.i haven’t been back in forty years — now the area seems to be only known for drunken spring break bacchanalia. Oh to be young again!

Good history on Wiki.

When I was a kid, my teacher told the story behind the song "London Bridge is falling down" and how it was after a raid by the Vikings. I wondered why the Vikings would travel all the way to Arizona to attack a stone bridge?
