Jumping late on this thread, but here is my input. Was a pc tech and troubleshooter and network IT about 15 yrs and owned a computer repair and networking business about 11 yrs.
Avast is best free AV imo. I have never experienced a problem with it and Malwarebytes but have heard that from others. AVG, lots of problems and a resource hog. Eset use to be good, probably still is but not free.
Get Malwarebytes, buy the premium version if you can but run the free version if you can’t buy it. If you put your money into anything put it into Malwarebytes Premium.
Also free Superantispyware, but buy it if you can for added protection. SAS does find nasties MWB doesn’t but MWB is a must imo.
I run Avast free (no need for paid ver imo), Malwarebytes Premium and Superantispyware paid version. They run fine together on my Win 7 - 64 bit Asus laptop.
Download Junkware Removal Tool and run it, it is free.
Don’t use Spybot anymore but it is free and good ware also.
Hey and I like Teatimer, never had problem with it.
Do you have a Firewall running? There is one built into Win 7. Is it turned on and updated?
Make sure Windows update is on to check for updates and update it whenever there are new updates.
A Router with firewall protection is good idea also but costs $.
Backup your important files to an external something..USB stick...hard drive.
Oh yea update your browser , there are security patches in browser updates. I like Palemoon the best, but none are perfect.
