Got to remember that, had Clint Eastwood had gotten the BD nomination, AS would have had a chance. When Mr. Eastwood was snubbed the movie had no chance. Remember you have to have for the BD to be able to win BP. That is an unwritten rule in the Oscars.

Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture without a Director nomination. That’s the last time I think.

Some movies have won without their director being nominated. One was Driving Miss Daisy. Granted it is rare, but it happens. I also think the last two years, the best director and best movie were different movies. Maybe the connection is not quite as strong as it used to be. FWIW, I loathed Birdman - easily in my bottom five of loathed movies.
