When it comes to the historical knowledge and performance of marches, especially for those written by John Philip Sousa, the United States Marine Band is considered a prime resource. Thats why during the month of March, The Presidents Own will be hosting Sousas March Mania, a tournament pitting 32 marches against each other for the Marine Band online community to determine which one is the favorite. Every day through April 6, marches will compete head to head while Marine Band friends and fans vote which ones advance in the tournament. Participants can listen to the competing marches below, download and print a tournament bracket, and vote for favorites on the Marine Band Facebook page, www.facebook.com/marineband. The champion march will be announced on April 7. In order to win "Sousas March Mania" you must obtain a perfect bracket, completed prior to the start of the first game at 8 a.m., on March 6 (honor system). The winners of Sousas March Mania will be named The March King for a day! If you are a winner, please notify Marine Band Public Affairs on April 7 through social media or by email at marineband.publicaffairs@usmc.mil.
1878: Thomas Edison successfully makes the first music recording and it was of John Sousa’s music.
Believe it was ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’. Souza wasn’t happy about it.
OMG! It’s like my ‘80s contest going here right now!
My Dad, career Army officer, had all of Sousa’s marches on a Sony reel-to-reel stereo he picked up on one of his all-inclusive overseas vacations.
Believe his favorite was the ‘Captain’s March’. He would recline and pretend to conduct.
When I read the signs, I would tap my brother on the shoulder and tell him we were going to McDonald’s, and no argument from little bro’. He knew Pop was settling in for a head banging mini-Sousa concert.
Entrance of the gladiators should be the odds on favorite of the current administration.
My dad had Sousa marches, and “circus” marches, on an LP that he would put on, on his “hi-fi” and play them LOUD. I would get behind the couch and fall asleep. I LOVED listening to that music. When he died in 1997, my siblings made sure I got the record album. Have not listened to it since, but it is on the bookshelf in our family room.
I’ve got the tape but the Sony was lost in a move. Same here, we liked it too but he enjoyed his alone time with Souza.
‘Military music is to music what military law is to law’?
We lost him Christmas day 2013, complications from Agent Orange exposure.
Awesome!
I have a Sousa album on my Ipod and I like to listen in the car if driving a long distance. Love that music!
I also have Ronald Reagan’s 90 sec. spots (5 CD’s worth) over the years and listening to them one time drove 50 miles past my turn off.
played in band in grammar & h.s. school.
Bandmaster loved Sousa.
When he thought we were getting “sloppy”, he’d pick up the tempo a whole lot.
