Surviving a Knife Attack

Knife attacks from the front can be scary, many knife attacks are psychologically personal. Ryan Hoover of Fit-to-Fit Krav Maga goes over some simple principles and tactics to defend against a frontal knife attack.

First Method Re-Direct/Stun

Basically, Ryan’s example is with a swift slap to the aggressor knife hand and instantly running diagonally to his left at a 45 degree angle. Ryan also shows upon removing or getting off line of the knife, he delivers a quick kick to the groin and runs off.

Control The second method is based off of the first in regards to creating a better angle and redirect. But what if the opportunities and dynamics of it all isn’t the same as in the first scenario, but wind up having to fight with this knife attacker. And, the struggle is now to control the knife to minimize any injuries.

Two on One Two on one is a term taken from Greco-Roman wrestling, where you have control over an arm with both of yours. The ideal positioning is to stand on the outside of the aggressor, so that it’s easier to defend from than standing in front of the aggressor. When you’re in front you have to deal with all four of his weapons (2 hands, 2 feet).

So basically, Ryan demonstrates this 2 on 1 control as being more dominant than trying to grab the knife with one hand and manipulating it into a wrist/joint locks. The rest of the knife survival story here.

Run fast

Run fastER - than the guy with the knife.

Or run faster than yourbuddy. ("I don't have to outrun him. I only have to outrun YOU.")

My mistake.

Looks like you ripped off that video from Funker Tactical.
They posted the video to YouTube last November.

Here’s the real, original link -

"Run fast."

Precisely...because in that very brief video one is indeed STILL in a fight, yet has secured 3-4 seconds of time.
Hopefully most of us only have to learn how to do this yet don't necessarily have to utilize these important skills in real life.

After 10+ years of training in martial arts I can definitely say this video is crap. An aggressive guy on adrenaline with a knife would have taken him out.

The only effective strategy I’ve ever seen (and this one is not a great option) is to acknowledge you’re probably gonna get cut, and you control where you get cut. Its better to get a superficial wound than a fatal one. My instructor brought in a guy who does training on this specific drill. Extremely difficult stuff but it can be useful if you’re really proficient in it (no,I don’t claim to be proficient in it).

Get away as quickly as possible is still the best strategy.

I love that move but for me I think its wiser to take a gun to a knife fight. :-)

You got that right. If the guy was more aggressive as in violence of action. The defender wouldn't have seen the knife only felt it as multiple punches until he realizes he has been stabbed and is bleeding out.

Anyone who stands there with the knife held out is more concerned with intimidation/robbery. It doesn't mean he won't cut/stab only less likely.

Those who say draw a gun at that range will likely loose. Open the range and get away unless you can't due to family with you or you are slower. Then you you can try to defend.

Yeah, right... melons are tiny things - too hard to hit. Try two closely spaced, aimed shots to the center of mass. (And no, TV watchers, I did not say “double tap”.)

If the knife guy is moving forward, move to the outside of his knife hand as you draw your weapon, and if need be move left and down to the ground with feet between your trunk and the knife as you draw your weapon.

Well stated. He wouldn’t even see it.

I think it was over in China a guy with a knife killed a couple of people and wounded about 20 within a very short time. It was difficult for them to bring the guy down as they were unarmed.

First rule of knife fighting: someone is gonna get cut.
Second rule: if you ain’t the one with the knife it’s probably gonna be you.

Now I'm just thinking out loud here. Suppose it's a knife guy (a criminal) against an older concealed-carry citizen. The older citizen doesn't have the mobility to sprint off to one side of the attacker.

What is your opinion of this: Suppose the citizen just drops to the ground as he draws. And by drop, I mean his back ends up on the ground. He might get kicked, but I'm thinking he'd be a bit difficult to stab. And I'm thinking the knife guy might be surprised by the drop move.

He wouldn’t even see it.

So true.

About ten years ago 4 or 5 Austrian, iirc, policemen had stopped a suspect at a train station. They had him surrounded close in but didn’t have him under control. He cut all of them very badly.

A drawn knife held hidden against the forearm and the perp presenting a friendly demeanor can get within arms reach before one knows it.
