After an exhaustive search, America's most famous allegedly abandoned pooch, Butterbean of Slidell, has been found. But the story in some ways remains unfinished.
On Thursday (March 19), the Humane Society of Louisiana tracked Butterbean down. Butterbean, a 6- or 7-year-old German shepherd mix, gained notoriety this week when she sprinted after a pickup truck owner who appeared to ditch her deliberately at a gas station near U.S. 11.
The image of Butterbean desperately racing after what seemed a cruel and heartless owner captured the hearts of many. Even now, people as far away as Palm Springs, Calif., have offered to drive to Louisiana, take ownership of Butterbean and give her a decent home.
But a woman who claims ownership of Butterbean isn't willing to give her up, according to Jeff Dorson, the Humane Society's local director. Dorson spent days chasing after the elusive dog and learned Butterbean enjoyed a sort of joint ownership arrangement north of Slidell. Two homes fed her, and the pooch split time between the houses.
Dorson said it is miraculous Butterbean, described as "sweet and affectionate," has never been hurt essentially running wild. It is, in fact, a normal occurrence for her to accompany the unidentified pickup truck driver, a neighbor of the professed owner, to the gas station and then gambol home through traffic.

The saga of Butterbean continues.
If I didn’t have three dogs already... I’d take her in too...
The person who dumped her should be whipped senseless.
One of our sweetest dogs was a dachshund mix that was walking home with it’s owner one day. A car stopped and gave the owner a ride and he left the dog on the side of the road.
The dog followed my brother home. A week later, my brother is outside with the dog at the place the dog was abandoned.
The owner walks by and says to his friend, “That’s a dumb dog. It couldn’t even find it’s way home.” The dog looked at it’s owner, and turned around and went back to my brother.
I don’t think Butterbean looks so happy. This dog needs a huge pen to run around in not a chain wrapped around its neck. Free Butterbean! How about a home in the country.
Not dumped. Co-owner A left Butterbean with co-owner B and the dog ran after co-owner A when he drove off. Bystander C saw this and confabulated a story and posted it on the internet.
Bustedbean. Sad doggy.
My bad, and my apologies, then.
I’d still take the pup... I love dogs.
I don’t think notoriety means what the ‘journalist’ thinks it means.
Doggie ping!
She can always come to our place for a good home. Our dogs are living large here on the farm.Great food, affection, best vet care, get to sleep indoors every night-they’ve got it made.
Click on my name to see the dogs that were ditched around here. I live in a rural area.
Ditched dogs are the most loyal.
That’s the way it should be.
I meant the “so happy” to be sarcasm.
As should those who form specific opinions without reading the freaking articles....
I wuv u too, sweetheart!!!
