Ted Cruz announced his presidential campaign at Liberty University this morning in front of a captive audience of nearly 1,400 studentsnone of whom had any choice in whether to attend.
That's because all Liberty students are obligated to show up for convocations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Absenteeism results in "four reprimands and a $10 fine," according to student Eli McGowan, who is president of the campus's Young Americans for Liberty chapter.
McGowan complained on Facbook that Cruz's decision to make his announcement at a Liberty U. convocation was "starkly deceptive," since it might appear to outside observers that throngs of students had decided to support Cruz of their own volition.

And so it begins. The whining, complaining, writhing, lying, deceitful, pandering activities of all who oppose a legitimate conservative candidate for president. Most of this will be done by liberals, moonbats and democrats. Those three words (liberals, moonbats and democrats) are interchangeable. Some of it will be done by rinos. Some by libertarians. And all of it will be gleefully reported by the main steam media.
Liberty University is privately owned and funded. Don’t like the rules there? Go somewhere else.
Of course they didn't know Cruz would be speaking there then. While I'm sure the vast majority of the crowd loved Ted, I think they have a small point. I have no idea whether Cruz knew it was mandatory, but they surely could have excused anyone who didn't want to go. Still, if I was a Paul supporter, I would want to hear what Ted had to say.
Too bad they won’t turn their back on Obama the way the NYPD did DeBlasio.
You never know. I attended a speech as a sophomore in college. It was George H. W. Bush in 1964, running for a senate seat from Texas against a liberal Democrat, Ralph Yarborough. Texas was still heavily Democrat at the time, but the change was coming.
Hey Robbie! How is that different from you hero wanting a law that everyone must vote?
Maybe it’s time for the Paultard/Paulbot cult head for South America; buy up a little piece of...oh, say Guyana; and establish their own little home away from home...perhaps they could call it ‘Paultown’.
Talking heads are all over this students being forced to attend the speech. It was the right venue, but wrong decision to speak to an audience that was forced to attend. How do you call it a pro-liberty when you force people to attend?
Too funny. When I saw the image of the author above I actually thought about this image and was wondering if someone would post it at some point it really is spot on.
I think someone who is for Paul wrote this. Besides I think there are rules going in about attending assemblies. No rule says you have to vote for Cruz.
Don’t companies make it mandatory to come and hear Hillary speeches? I do believe they do. I was forced to hear a Willie Brown Speech once when I was with Pacific Bell in San Francisco. It was mandatory for managers
The job of the media is to make up “narratives” that appeal to stupid people.
They’ve outdone themselves with that one LOL!
It begins.
The smear campaign against Cruz will be unlike anything ever seen in Republican politics.
From Reason? I'd say that is a safe bet.
So bogus. I was a student at Liberty School of Law and going to convocation is just part of the deal you sign up for. Besides, you don’t get that kind of electricity on demand. Especially not at Liberty. I spent three years of my life attending those convocations. I can say with confidence that the vast majority of Liberty students would want to be there, would be natural enthusiasts for an eloquent and principled conservative like Ted Cruz, as confirmed by the rambunctious responses he was getting from the crowd. What you were seeing there was the real deal.
To the Left I say: Beware. Cruz probably has a better chance of igniting the sleeping evangelical giant than anyone else in the field. If he succeeds, and he is well on his way, no amount of ballot rigging can save you. Just sayin’ ...
The Virginia Governor (spit) was originally scheduled to speak...students shouldn't bitch that they got to 'trade up'...
Not to mention, the same students have been "forced" to listen to liberal speakers and Obama campaign donors as well. Mark Burnett is one that comes to mind.
Actually Cruz, showing that he understands federalism, has stated that the pot issue is one for the several states, not an overreaching ferragummit...
