Ted Cruz announced his presidential campaign at Liberty University this morning in front of a captive audience of nearly 1,400 studentsnone of whom had any choice in whether to attend.
That's because all Liberty students are obligated to show up for convocations on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Absenteeism results in "four reprimands and a $10 fine," according to student Eli McGowan, who is president of the campus's Young Americans for Liberty chapter.
McGowan complained on Facbook that Cruz's decision to make his announcement at a Liberty U. convocation was "starkly deceptive," since it might appear to outside observers that throngs of students had decided to support Cruz of their own volition.

“Me thinks the journalists at Reason are afraid Cruz would enforce Federal pot laws.”
At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last week, Ted Cruz responded to a question about marijuana legalization in Colorado by endorsing a federalist approach to the issue. I actually think this is a great embodiment of what Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis called the laboratories of democracy, the Texas senator said. If the citizens of Colorado decide they want to go down that road, thats their prerogative. I personally dont agree with it, but thats their right.
If Federal law has called something like illegal immigration or illegal drug use or same sex marriage unlawful, choosing not to enforce the law seems like a dereliction of duty. Now if you want to rally the country to change the law or repeal the law via proper legislative change, that’s another thing.
Reason has become the voice of unreason. They are so obsessed with drugs anymore that even their champion, Rand Paul, seems unable to address serious issues.
Indeed. He is a BIG threat to them.
Hmmm. I woulda thought homosexuals wouldn’t want to attend a Christian University.
Unlike anything you have seen since, Romney, Palin, GW, McCain, Reagan...
The Marxists only have one thing, namecalling.
Pray America is waking
The perfect Homosexual Nazi. Obama’s Volk.
As I understand it, at Liberty U. weekly convocations are mandatory regardless of the speaker or topic. How they respond is entirely up to the individual student.
Cruz is the best conservatives have had since RWR.
The liberals will go even more insane than they already are.
Republican and Democrat.

It wasn’t federal statute that made marijuana(medical or otherwise) illegal. It was the DEA classifying it as a schedule I drug, which is ridiculous. Cocaine, Opium, and Morphine aren’t even schedule II drugs. They can reschedule the drug any time they like. It’s within the Executive Branch’s authority to alter the regulations or change how they’re enforced. There’s no need to repeal any laws at all, as congress never passed any. That’s without going into whether the controlled substances act is even constitutional in the first place.
