You missed the point. Identifying "things that need changing" implies the existence of a standard independent of the thing being measured.

No it doesn’t. I don’t need a standard independent of the anything to decide I can do something better. I didn’t need a standard of angry to decide I was getting too angry too often. I didn’t need a standard of fitness to decide I could do with more exercise and less doritos. I didn’t need a standard of frugality to decide I spend too much money on stupid crap. And even I did, with 311 million people in this country, I can probably find one.
