I remember the first time watching that. I was captivated. I was only 5 or so years old at the time, and I'd never seen anything like that before. (it was released the year I was born). It was amazing to me seeing that little ship flying by and taking fire, then the bigger ship pursuing it, and it just kept going and going and going on the screen, as if it would never end.
I wanted nothing more than to see it again, but back then VCRs didn't yet exist, and of course there was no internet. Being in a very rural area, once a movie wasn't showing in theaters, that was IT - it was gone forever. ...Until it might come on Television. My kids will never know such a world, and won't appreciate watching a great movie.
The Borg used the Cube ship because it is efficient. Though I suffer from it just as much as the next SciFi fan our desire for Vessels that travel in space to be aerodynamic is not logical nor efficient, but I doubt it will stop anyone!
Example the Apollo LEM is not aesthetically cool and it certainly is NOT aerodynamic, but it was efficient and got the job done.
I first wife was not a big fan of SciFi so I went by myself. I remember thinking if the move ended right then I would have gone back to see it again! ;-)

As soon as they Beamed on board, the Storm Troopers would kick their asses. Those little toy, ‘label maker’ looking Phaser things(or whatever they’re called) probably wouldn’t penetrate armor, and they would be mowed down by the Laser Carbines by the Storm Troopers anyway... lol
All very true. Star Trek did try to achieve at least a SLIGHT amount of realism regarding space. lol
As you said, we all like to see aerodynamic looking space ships in movies when it’s completely unrealistic, and even harmful really. There are also no flaming explosions in space! You also won’t see space craft ‘flying’/maneuvering similar to fighter planes, and turning on a dime! They would have to be nearly covered with boosters. lol
CAS saves infantry lives; and for CAS you need long loiter time and ability to absorb punishment from triple A and ground fire.
If they replace that flying tank with fast-movers... ehh.. don’t think that’s going to work out too well.
When it comes to trek fans and political affiliation here is what I have experienced / discovered.
Star Trek Original Series = Either hippies or Libertarians
Star Trek The Next Generation = Soft Socialists / Liberals
Star Trek Deep Space Nine = Hard Core Conservatives
Star Trek Voyager = Hard Core Liberal Control Freaks
Star Trek Enterprise = No One Admits they like it...

I was 16 when it come out; was dating a chick who bugged the Hell out of me to take her to see it. So I went, and it was well worth it. It’s a little corny now, looking at it through adult eyes; but watching it with my kids when they were little was a lot of fun, seeing their reactions.
Ha... I remember going to see “Return of the Jedi” several years later (1985, was it???), being older, and having the SAME kind of reaction watching the speeder bikes racing through the woods on Andor (sp??) where the mini-wookies lived.
Great special effects, for back then.
I always thought some Warthog engines would look good hanging off the wings of an Osprey. The sight of that hovering & landing in a middle eastern city street would make any jihadi crap his pants.
What I have found interesting is how the ships in the Star Trek series’ are all akin to naval battleships, crusiers, destroyers, etc.
Whereas just about every other series, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, had the equivalent of a naval aircraft carrier that carried fighters and attack craft.
Given this, I then to notice that major battles tends to be more pre-WWII naval tactics in the Star Trek universe, and more post-WWII tactics in other SciFi storylines.

lol I remember when they were re-released to theaters back during the 90s. That was around the time when my wife and I met, and she had never seen any of the Star Wars movies. I couldn’t believe it. She was born in 78, so they were just before her time.
I took her to see it, and she loved them. Was so cool how her first time watching them was at the theater. Our kids love them too. It’s so cool seeing our boys enjoy the Star Wars movies. They also love the toys and video games. I remember I was crazy about getting the toys too. What I wouldn’t give to have all of the toys I got back then new, and in their packages/boxes. I’d have a small fortune. I still run across them from time to time when I go into my grandmother’s attic.
LOL I believe I responded in a similar manner. And, of course I had to mention the dark side of the force if Lord Vader was anywhere in the fleet.
I took my girlfriend to see a movie in the winter of 77 and we saw the first preview of Star Wars. The whole way through the preview I was thinking “This is gonna be GREAT!”. As soon as the preview ended she turns to me and says “That looks really stupid”. We broke up shortly after.
My wife is a total Star Wars nut, a die hard conservative and much better looking.
