I read that his girlfriend/fiancee had just dumped him and called off a wedding. This would explain his depressed mental state. I can understand that if he was so depressed he would want to off himself, but not take 149 other souls with him> UNLESS, he was be bullied at work and was about to lose his job/pilot status then he may have wanted to get back at his employer and the rest of the cruel world.
