O’Baxter is just full of himself enough to think he is qualified to rewrite the Bible.

He’s been everywhere and done about everything, doncha know.

Good topic. I enjoy reading the comments here. I saw the show on National Geographic tonight. I give it a thumbs up and a 75%. Positives: the apostles appear loyal, the miracles were inspiring and the early Christian art was impressive. Negatives: the narrator regularly used words such as “allegedly and apocryphally” that cast suspicion on the history, the lighting and costuming were low budget, and the story is a brief review.

National Geographic does makes efforts to preserve our Federal Republic and this show is good way to preserve our Christian heritage.

Bill O’Reilly writes good books. Well, Martin Duggard writes them and O’Reilly sells them. I’ve read several “When I was a young guy, I lived on fast food. Burgers, fries, pizza, fried seafood. Don’t do that” (Humanity 2008: 245). “One more thing. We’re going to get this culture war over with faster than anyone believes. According to Sun Tzu, No country benefits from a prolonged warfare” (Warrior 2006: 15).

O’Reilly has made a fictional novella loosely based on Biblical texts. His inflated sense of his own importance leads him to believe that this is the account of Jesus that the world has been waiting for. He often fancies himself as a Moses-type prophet. Only a few of his die hard groupies will endure his misrepresentation of scripture. It'll be fun to watch him explode when the critics start in on this farcical movie.

I have the book - but it doesn’t seem to fit the movie.

And .. my usual gripe about the portrayal of Jesus was as expected. The King of Glory would not have gone around in ragged, filthy clothing, grossly unwashed hair, dirt on his face; I just can’t buy it. In the movie Ben Hur, Jesus was portrayed as appropriately dressed, but with a clean face, body and hair. It’s the only way I can picture HIM.

AND .. I NEVER COULD PICTURE JESUS AS AN ARAB - BECAUSE JESUS WAS JEWISH - WHICH MEANS HE HAD LIGHTER COLORED SKIN THAN THE ARABS. AND - TO HAVE A MEMBER OF ISLAM PORTRAY JESUS IS A FARCE.

I will not be wasting my money.

O’Reilly showed clips of this movie on his TV show. It looked BAD. Jesus had ZERO charisma. You know a movie is bad and low-budget when you can tell all the beards are glued on.

Ancient Jews were more semetic than they are now. Arabs are also semetic. Jews having lighter skin is the result of the diaspora when Jews were forced to leave their homeland. Ancient Jews, Phoenicians, Arabs probably all looked very similar.

the funny thing is that oreilly rails about the internet and bloggers for ‘making stuff up’ and for ‘not being serious reporters’ yet the whole book, killing Jesus, was practically made up- re-written- it’s funny how he criticizes others for doing exactly what he does

I agree with you that it wasn’t great. I believe, in O’Baxter’s defense, it was made not to tell the story as we all know it, but only as to what source material would corroborate - history or news, whatever you want to call it. In one sense he did us all a great service rebutting all the efforts by media to say Jesus didn’t even really exist. He did and that’s what we can prove happened without using the Bible.

“The Passion of the Christ” set a bar that is tough to top.

Since you mention Mel Gibson, I must add that it would seem that Ridly Scott raided Mel’s costume and prop closet for this production! (Especially Herod’s outfit and the Pharisees!)

But what I really found troubling was the portrayal of Jesus Himself. Since the actor was a Muslim, I didn’t expect a particularly reverend portrayal, but this guy played Jesus as a clueless bumpkin who had no idea who he was.

Even a perfunctory reading of the Gospels would reveal that, at least from the time He was 12, Jesus knew EXACTLY Who He was.

And from the early chapters of the Gospel of Luke, Mary, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Joseph, Simeon and Anna knew TOO.

I was offended...are Christians ALLOWED to get “offended”? LOL!

Jesus’s face is never shown in “Ben Hur”. It was what made that portrayal very special.

Perhaps you are thinking of “King of Kings” in which Jeffrey Hunter played Jesus. That one fits your description perfectly.

That’s not too bad. I just read a blog on a British Medieval History page about British monarchs that mentioned Elizabeth II’s current reign on the thrown.

"Sorry, O'Reilly - You missed the mark on this one."

You watched it, didn't you?. That says to me he hit the mark. BTW, I didn't.

I mean think about it. An actor who is a sinner, who is rotten with sin is going to “act” like the spotless Lamb of God! I can’t get past that with any of these bible movies.
