What’s a “vacation”?

Middle class people that work to support themselves damn well can’t afford these things,

but those on EBT & welfare sure can.

Well if we don't give a good portion of our pay to the government then how are illegals and welfare breeding cows going to get free stuff?

Wal-Mart has said that its average hourly wage is $11.81 for hourly workers, not including managers, and that only 5,000 of its 1.4 million U.S. workers make the minimum wage.

Correct on all counts.

I bought a still-new 1986 Ford Mustang GT in 1987 with cash since I was making an average of $900 a day selling pay telephones. Does that count?

We just bought our first new car in over 17 years. I need something that my wife and daughter can drive in that will be safe and dependable for the foreseeable future. I inherit the 16 year old minivan, but at least now I have AC, no coolant leaks, no exhaust leaking into the car, and no need to run the heat at all times to avoid stalling. Even though we just paid off a small loan, I am stressed out over the new payments just the same; I had serious heart palpitations and dizziness this morning, the likes of which I never had before. Is this the price of trying to get by?

Thanks to the Obama 6 year recession and the increase in the cost of so many things thanks to socialistic fees and taxes - everyone’s standard of living is in decline.

The country is in desperate need of growth, socialism kills growth.

RE: I was making an average of $900 a day selling pay telephones

That puts you squarely in the VERY UPPER MIDDLE CLASS. I’d say in the 5%, you know, the one Obama says don’t pay their fair share :)

Do Freepers believe the average credit card debt is $15K? I was flabbergasted when I saw that. Is that really the case?

That’s still good pay now, imagine what it was like for a 27 year old in the 1980’s...

Mine isn't and hasn't been since I did the math on the interest a couple of decades ago. But I have a number of friends who are quite open about being $20K or more in credit card debt. These are also people with student loan debt. They do not expect to be out of debt ever in their lives. And it doesn't bother them!

How does anyone do anything but pay the interest on that kind of debt?

"Some argue that the most sensible income amount to attach to the middle class would be the median household income, of around $54,000."

Not where I live. I'd put the LOWER end of the middle-class (family of four) at about $70,000-$75,000.

As retirees we go on a lot of vacations.
Cruises, and a lot of US vacation spots.
I don’t see any lack of people, they are as crowded as I’ve ever seen them.
