I would forget about wheel guns all together. Five rounds and you're finished, one way or the other. It took a trained police officer 10 more rounds to neutralize the "gentle giant", and that was after two rounds were fired in the vehicle, one of which wounded him. Good thing he had a semi-auto with more than 12 rounds in just one magazine. And then there was that recent incident in Pennsylvania, where some walking a dog was confronted by three hoodlums and murdered. He wasn't armed, but if someone is faced with multiple hostiles, do you really want to do battle with five rounds?

My preferred carry weapon is a Glock 23, which is a compact .40 S&W. I also carry two spare magazines. So, with 13 rounds each and one in the chamber, I have 40 chances to neutral any threats. That's eight times more rounds than one of those two revolvers can put out. And changing a magazine is much easier and faster than reloading a revolver.

Erik: the first rule of gunfighting is HAVE A GUN. You can’t carry a Glock 19 or 23 in your pocket at work. You CAN carry a Ruger LCR and quite comfortably.

There are many recorded instances where the victim simply exposed his pocket handgun and the perps dispersed. Not many thugs are willing to get shot with ANY caliber so at least you have a fighting chance.

I recall an event in Soldotna a couple of years ago when a fellow was walking his dog and was attacked from behind by an old brown bear looking for an easy kill. He dispatched that beast with Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan with “only” 5 rounds of .454 Casull and lived to tell the tale.
