We are the interstellar species that will inhabit the universe. We are not yet around for a million years. If we continue to exist as a species we will inhabit the known universe.

If advanced technological civilization continues to exist, we will possibly explore a tiny portion of the galaxy. However, all complex systems break down over time, and the more complicated the system, the more likely it will eventually fail.

The collapse of world civilization is only a few large-scale crop failures away, probably only one such event. With mega-cities in the future of 50-million or more inhabitants there would be chaos on unprecedented levels and no amount of police or military power with the ability to control it. This chaos would further disrupt distribution patterns and contribute to more breakdown. Population levels dropping precipitously would bring down the standard of living and blunt technological advance. Population growth and high living standards go hand-in-hand due to division of labor.

Ergo, the likelihood we will end up like Captain Kirk and Co. jetting around the universe at hyper-light speed is probably nil. The likely scenario is a fragmented world of warring tribes living amidst the ruins of once mighty cities.
