Roku: Good Deal?
Roku Website ^

Posted on 04/12/2015 11:10:39 AM PDT by ducttape45

Hello all. I was wondering if I could fellow Freepers about a streaming video product called "Roku."

I've heard it talked about on radio programs, and I've seen it advertised on the Internet of course. I just wondered if anyone has Roku or could possibly cue me in on how well it performs and your overall assessment of it.

I turned off my Comcast TV because they keep driving the prices up and taking channels away and I got sick and tired of not being able watch TV stations that were once part of a standard cable package.

Thanks.

also, there are private Roku channels, many for free, that can be added to the Roku by clicking on these while logged into your Roku account online. From what I have gathered they are “private” as opposed to appearing in the Roku store.

Be sure to load “The YouTube Channel” and learn how to use it.

Repost: We stopped
CABLEtv years and years ago. Kids growing up have been the
better for it.
After youngest left nest, we got a ROKU machine & pay for the
NetFlix
streaming option.

ROKU has lots of time wasting channels. Not really any
high quality stuff.
The ROKU movie channels are dominated by “B” & “C”
level stuff that have lost their copyrights .
Our ROKU machine is mostly used
to stream the NetFlix and YouTubes.

I dont think NetFlix streaming is
that great at movies either. Too many “B” or “C” choices.
The NetFlix does
have ‘some’ good movies and some good (i think cable) tv shows a year
out of
date. Which is fine by us.

The saving grace with ROKU to me is the recent
addition of Youtube. I like old movies.
HWood could have fallen off the map
back in the 60s and i would not have missed it. Dilligent searching for online
movies (CopyWrited) of a “B-B+” level keeps me entertained when ROKU and
NetFlix lets me down. This does require some work though.

Here is a
movie list of some recent searching i will start watching before some of them
are forced to delete from Youtube . Most all of these meet my first criteria of
having a quality visual image . Many i have not watched yet....
First -
the Carmen Miranda movies - starting with Down Argentine Way, 1940 (Lib of
Congress culturally significant , and stunning color too!) and 3 or 4 of her
later movies mostly all before 1946. Ive seen first few of these and will
finish the rest in the next week or two. I also watched Claudette Colbert in
“Three Came Home” Jap POW story. Very Good!

Here is my Youtube search list -
most i have not seen yet -some have already been removed... These will sometimes
show up
Later and disappear again. The Youtube is like a big hide and seek
game of copywrite war. If anyone has questions , i
Will reply .

For the first few weeks you will probably be just locking in channels that you like. It's somewhat overwhelming at first. Don't worry about what current content you may be giving up on your current service, they will come crawling to us instead of us crawling to them...

I guess the biggest thing I miss is the individual channels one can get on cable, when you pay for the price for those channels. Syfy, FX, Fox News, Discovery Channel, etc, aren’t available. Not that I need those channels but I miss watching River Monsters on Discovery/Animal Planet.

I’ve got a 2 and a 3. So many channels available on Roku, but I mostly use Netflix and Hulu. Highly recommended.

Your link now shows a Youtube msg of This content is no longer available due to a lawsuit by the Discovery Channel. I guess all channels will be suing to get their content off Youtube now.

I have 10 Roku sticks with a cumulative 30 years on them and have not had a problem with any. I have this many because I have lots of grandkids who have yet to mangle one. And FWIW Roku has an app that works on cell phone or tablet.

Oh, I know that. Someone will always upload it anyway. Generaly you have a 2 or 3 day opportunity to watch it before it gets pulled. This is nothing new.

I’m new to Youtube since I cut the TWC cord last week (Roku now) and really don’t understand how to navigate it for movies I want, do you know of any good how-to advice for finding full-length movies that don’t take off to some Russian site to sign up and do God knows what to your data footprint?

What’s the deal with all the ‘301 views’ on newly-uploaded ‘full movies’? Thank you in advance very very much!
