Methodist group seeks LGBT inclusion

DURHAM The conference at Epworth United Methodist Church on Saturday was one participants said they couldn’t have even imagined happening not so long ago.

In speeches, panels and small groups, 80 people gathered to discuss how to fully welcome the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community into the United Methodist Church.

“It’s a conversation that we couldn’t have had,” said Jimmy Creech, a former Methodist pastor who lost his position at Fairmont United Methodist Church in Raleigh in the wake of his outspoken support for gays and lesbians in the late 1980s.

Years later, as a pastor in Nebraska, he was defrocked by the church after he performed a same-sex wedding.

At an annual meeting of the North Carolina Conference in June, church leaders from Epworth will present a resolution calling for all discriminatory language to be removed from church teachings, with a focus on language against homosexuality. The conference covers 56 counties in the eastern half of the state.

The actions at the June meeting are a lead-up to an international church meeting in 2016, where those in favor of amending the church’s policies hope to gain ground.

The Rev. Frank Schaefer, a Methodist minister who was defrocked and then reinstated into the church after performing a same-sex wedding for his son, urged participants at Saturday’s conference to be vocal supporters of those changes, with resolutions, letters to their church representatives and posts on social media.

The Methodist church has become a Sunday club for liberals.

I’m a member of the Methodist Church, and I use a King James version of the bible. Sadly, I don’t see myself staying with the Methodist church past 2016. Guess I’ll have start reading the bible by myself at home, and stop attending church after 2016.

I fell in with the Methodists after being raised and confirmed in the ELCA. It just is not working for me anymore. It’s all politics and social justice. I am craving a Bible-based church/denomination. Would love some recommendations.

When/If this happens, I leave the Methodist Church.

Save yourself the trouble and leave now. If you truly want to follow Wesley's teaching, go Wesleyan. Otherwise, go LCMS, PCA, SBC, or AG. (I went LCMS 26 years ago and never looked back; I happen to agree with its theological doctrine more than the others, but all have the same social doctrine, and all of them present Jesus as the only way to the Father.)

I joined a confessing church, the PCA. It is a denomination that doesn’t hem and haw about the accuracy of the bible and it doesn’t bend the rules to put people in the pews. My church turned a couple down for membership last fall because they were living together.

Southern Baptists have not wavered from the word. Make sure the church is not just Baptist in name but affiliated with the SBC.

Just got home from our fantastic Bible Study at our Methodist church. Bibles are in every pew and we even have those with iPads and their Bible on them.

Tonight, studying 1Timothy, and how we should pray for our leadership, we all saw how we let things take our time away from prayer time, Bible Study at home and quiet time to let God or Jesus or The Holy Spirit communicate with us. We're praying for Franklin Graham's goal in 2016 to make American Christians wake up to our life in Christ and how that is the most precious gift we have been given! We have healing prayer services where we lay hands on those who want to be covered in prayer. We have seen miracles both happen immediately and happen through intercessory prayer.

Our church is not perfect in several ways but we do hear The Word preached and not blasphemed.

The worship practices of LCMS is a very short walk from ELCA; the doctrines of LCMS as are far away from ELCA as heaven is from hell, and that is not just an analogy. As I wrote in the last message, you can go LCMS, PCA, AG, or SBC. You could even go Orthodox or RC, if you get the right parish and a priest who loves the Bible and God more than tradition and extra-Biblicality.

Nothing new: Paul warned the elders from Ephesus (Acts 20:28-30) that from their own numbers (the elders) would false teachers arise to “devour the flock.” Maybe a keen pair of scissors will work to remove the offending passages...why not?

That all happened around 1600.....how's that working out????

To welcome the LGBT all they want to be is worshiped.

See Matthew 16:15-16; Acts 4:12; Romans 16:16 for starters.

Is there any Southern Baptist church nearby? 100% Bible based.

Paul spoke the words in Acts well prior to 100 A.D. The straying of the church at Ephesus was noted as having already begun in Revelation 2.

I’m sorry: the comments re: “scissors” were meant to be taken with a dose of sarcasm.
