MADISON -- Gov. Scott Walker on Monday signed Executive Order #156, authorizing the Wisconsin National Guard to assist authorities in Jefferson County in responding to the avian influenza virus affecting Jefferson, Juneau and Barron counties.
"We must act quickly and efficiently to contain the outbreak and protect domestic poultry," Walker said. "It is important to note, however, there is no threat to humans with the avian flu outbreak."
According to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), avian influenza virus has been detected in three Wisconsin poultry flocks, affecting tens of thousands of chickens and turkeys.
Walker's executive order allows the Wisconsin National Guard to assist in the response and help contain the outbreak, as well as offer assistance in site clean-up. The location of the outbreak in Jefferson County, affecting as many as 180,000 chickens, has not been officially disclosed by the DATCP.
The state veterinarian, through DATCP, requested up to 14 Wisconsin National Guard personnel be made available, on a rotating schedule, for immediate assistance. This assistance from the Wisconsin National Guard is necessary according to state officials, because federal resources are thin due to avian influenza virus outbreaks in other states, particularly in the Midwest.
If anyone finds a sick or dead bird, they are directed not to touch it.
Quick, decisive action.
Perhaps Walker should have started a Twitter campaign

Don’t touch the bird!

Well, we still don’t know what his position will be on immigration next time he speaks, and we pretty much don’t have a clue what he would do as President, but we know where he stands on the Avian flu.
I know I’ll sleep better tonight.
If he just breaks the back of government unions like he did in Wisconsin, that’s enough for me. We’re not going to win in a single, fell swoop. It will take a generation or more.
The only problem I have with how he handled the unions is that he gave the Public Safety Unions a Pass because they supported him. I applaud anyone who will stand up to unions and make a difference, but let’s not play that old game of political favorites.
Politics is the game of favorites. You win by playing them. You cannot win without allies. You have to fight with the army you have, not the perfect army. That’s Walker’s strategy. It’s a winning strategy and you can’t play if you don’t win.
