Agreed. I believe that if you take the responsibility for owning a pet, you take the responsibility all the way to the end.
I have no anger towards people who cannot care for a pet for a variety of reasons, and take it to a shelter, because that happens.
But I despise and detest someone who would just turn a domesticated pet out into the outdoors. I can think of few crueler things.
I was a military dependent, and when I lived in Yokosuka, Japan, there were a huge amount of feral dogs, dogs that had been just let go by military personnel as they rotated out. I got attacked by a pack of about forty of them once, but that is another story...
When I lived in the Philippines, you never saw any feral dogs or cats where I lived on the base, and it only occurred to me later why: the domesticated cats and dogs didn’t stand a chance against the Philippine wildlife, huge snakes that could eat pigs, monitor lizards, wild boars, you name it. They didn’t have anything like that in Japan.
We had to have our cat and dog put down when we left the Philippines to go back to the states. There was no choice, we couldn’t bring them back with us, and we couldn’t find anyone to take them in. We hated my Mom and Dad for a period of time for doing it, but...what could they do?
