That is one heck of a fat lip the serpent gave him. I used to catch snakes as a kid and was bitten many times but I never was foolish enough to catch poisonous snakes.

I just read that there are non-venomous watersnakes in that area that are easy to mistake for water moccassins, so maybe he thought he had caught one of those.
