An irate Baltimore councilman said using the word "thug" to describe the rioters who terrorized the city on Monday is just another racial code word.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, City Council President Bernard (Jack) Young and even President Obama have called the protestors who burned and looted the city thugs.
Councilman Carl Stokes was having none of it. He dropped the N-word in equating thug with a racist stereotype in an emotionally-charged exchange with Erin Burnett on CNN Tuesday night.
"Of course it's not the right word to call our children thugs," Stokes said. "These are children who have been set aside, marginalized who have not been engaged by us."
Burnett interrupted: "But how does that justify what they did? That's a sense of right and wrong. They know it's wrong to steal and burn down a CVS and an old person's home. I mean, come on."
"Come on? Calling them thugs?" Stokes asked.
"Just call them n-----," Stokes said. "Just call them n-----. No, we don't have to call them by names such as that. We don't have to do that."
Stokes then challenged Burnett.
"You wouldn't call your child a thug if they should do something that would not be what you would want them to do," Stokes said.
Burnett shot back: "I would hope I would call my son a thug if he ever did such a thing."

My daughter went through a TERRIBLE stage when she was 13. She began acting like a bully at school and seemed proud of it. When her own mother (yours truly) told her she was nothing but a bully it pulled her up short and made her cry. Then she quit acting like a bully.
Sometimes the truth hurts, but it is necessary. No one likes bullies or thugs, even other bullies and thugs.

Gosh, I'm sick of this. People who would burn down a city need to be called by the most demeaning, insulting names imaginable. And I'm really sick of one ethnic group curtailing the freedom of speech we used to have in the US.
FWIW, calling them thugs is an acknowledgement that they don't represent all blacks.
I always used it to reference union lackies.

Not only is it not exclusive to them, but it is also not applicable to all blacks -- or even most blacks, I would say -- by any means.

The word thug descends from Thuggee, a murderous criminal organization and pseudo-religion in India, that was systematically torn apart using more modern criminology.
“Thugs” were indiscriminate murderers and robbers, with a vague association to the goddess of death, Kali, though they had members that were both Hindus and Muslims. They preferred to strangle their victims from behind, often breaking their spine with a knee at the same time.
They would murder anyone: men, women, children, Indians and British. They preferred those who were traveling, at first in small groups, then later ambushing and wiping out entire caravans, butchering them then burying them in shallow graves.
The criminal gangs descended from the Thuggee still exist, but are far less murderous, and are called “Dacoits.”

Thug doesn’t describe the color of their skin, it describes the content of their character.
