She was older than her character. I believe Grace Lee Whitney was 36 when TOS premiered, a year older than Shatner. It's not surprising she showed her age in the 80s and 90s Star Trek. Of course, alcoholism during the time of TOS probably didn't help. Funny thing how they ignore Yeoman Rand when she was with Star Trek from the beginning. Instead the "classic crew" lineup always shows Chekov, when in reality he didn't debut until season 2. The reboot "prequel" films use the season 2 and 3 lineup as well. I'd like to know where Yeoman Rand is in this timeline.

Grace Lee Whitney unfortunately got shafted. The character started out as little more than eye candy, but she could have been developed over three seasons if they had gone that route. Certainly if you had asked Roddenberry who the "major" characters were at the debut of the show in 1966, he would have named Rand before Uhura (a promo still from the pilot shows Kirk, Spock, and Rand). Of course, they'd never admit that today.

the "classic crew" lineup always shows Chekov, when in reality he didn't debut until season 2. The reboot "prequel" films use the season 2 and 3 lineup as well.

The funny thing is that the episode "Space Seed" was a first season episodes, but in the movie "The Wrath of Kahn," Kahn says he knows Chekov. To me, that implied that the character was always there but he wasn't promoted to the bridge crew until later.
