A man suspected of vandalizing the St. Cloud Islamic Center had regularly attended prayer services there, St. Cloud Police said.
The incident was reported at 4:48 a.m. Thursday on the 300 block of Fifth Avenue South in St. Cloud. It happened while prayer services were taking place inside. The front door window of the Islamic Center and a window of a nearby car were broken, police said.
Witnesses chased a man and detained him for police.
Officers determined that the windows had been broken with a basketball-sized plaster ball that is artwork. The suspect made the piece and obtained it from his residence, police said.
Witnesses said the suspect sprayed the building with beer and broke the windows. Police say they found an empty Corona beer bottle and a small plastic bag of garbage that had been dumped.
Police say they arrested 29-year-old Abdourahamane Diallo of St. Cloud, who is in Stearns County Jail. They said he appeared intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
Diallo told officers he regularly attended prayer services at the Islamic Center. He said he was frustrated with issues in his personal life, including losing an expensive phone, and he damaged the center because of the frustrations, police said.
Police said Diallo is also a suspect in an incident earlier in which the rearview mirrors of a vehicle were damaged.
Five previous reports of vandalism had occurred at the Islamic Center between Nov. 7 and Dec. 3. The damage included two broken windows to the center and three cars broken car windows.
St. Cloud police investigated the incidents and added extra patrols and plain-clothes officers to the area.
