First, and I know trolls say this but, I am a HUGE Ted Cruz supporter. The wife and I have already donated a substantial sum to his campaign and will continue to do so.
Having said that, I just went to his "official" store to pick up some bumper stickers. One of the requirements is to list your employer. I'm sorry but that's none of their d*mned business. I replied to the email to that effect as well.
Maybe I'm being too sensitive about it but my opinion is if you want to show your support you needn't have to sacrifice your privacy to do so.
Is that in case you are really funneling Employers money to the candidate?
democrats do this, and thus think like that.
Not 100% certain, but I think if they are considering purchases to be a form of political contribution, FEC requires employer information for online donations.
CYA on biz contributions.
Can’t you fill in that box with “not applicable”?
It is an FEC requirment is to disclose where you work and where you live when you make a political gift.
Well instead of my money going to the campaign in support via buying bumper stickers my money will likely be going to Cafe Press.
If there is some Federal Campaign law that says you have to collect that information I’d like to see it. It wouldn’t change my decision to buy elsewhere but I’d at least give Senator Cruz a pass on it.
Federal election law. I think that this requirement has been recently overturned, but this is just a vestige of that old law.
Just tell them you are self employed. You really are if you stop to think about it.
Employer? What the heck!?
You are trying to give them money, and they expect you to jump through hoops and divulge personal information.
The political class’s sense of entitlement is limitless.
Yup. Just a quick glance and its number 3 step on the Walker for president site too. It doesn’t mean anything.
You are right. It is not Cruz’ fault.
Yep. I’m seeing the same on Scott Walker and rand paul donation pages too.
A gift? I’ve made contributions by personal check. Didn’t list an employer (I don’t have one anyway).
OK maybe I was being a tad sensitive.
It doesn’t really matter as I’m retired but just the thought of them demanding that information. I was going to order under my wife’s name as she’s the one that wanted a sticker (I tend not to put anything on my vehicle) and I wasn’t going to put her employer down. Just went back and changed it to me and “retired” so will be getting them after all.
I very rarely post here as I enjoy reading more than arguing so I apologize that one of my infrequent posts is a rant that isn’t really relevant.
It’s the law for any donation (I think) for over $250.
“Vandelay Industries” worked fine for me.
When I filed regular reports with Texas Ethics Commission we had to report employment info for political contributions - didn’t matter whether you were Republican or Democrat. Seems like the women contributing were generally housewives and the guys were self-employed consultants. No big deal.
http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/notices.shtml
“Under the Act and FEC regulations, political committees must report the name, address, occupation and employer of any individual who contributes more than $200 in a calendar year (or in an election cycle, in the case of an authorized committee) (11 CFR 104.3(a)(4)). Committees must make their best efforts to obtain and report this information.”
If you have donated to Cruz before, as you claim, how come you never noticed this before?
I might be off base here, but you are getting worked up about giving money to a candidate online and you are concerned about privacy?
And you are using a credit card?
Think about that for a second.
About ten seconds after that card is processed it would be possible for just about anyone to know a lot more about you than they would ever find by knowing your employer.
I am NOT suggesting that you should not give money—I AM saying that in today’s political climate when you donate to any candidate you are going onto a list. And that “list” can and will be cross referenced and sold to other “entities.”
Your paranoia is well founded. Its just the specific concern is not.
