Simon Pegg: 'comic book films are dumbing us down'

“Now we’re essentially all consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes. Adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously!

“It is a kind of dumbing down in a way, because it’s taking our focus away from real-world issues.”

“Films used to be about challenging, emotional journeys or moral questions that might make you walk away and re-evaluate how you felt about... whatever. Now we’re walking out of the cinema really not thinking about anything, other than the fact that the Hulk had a fight with a robot.”

Ach! Everyone here is missing an important point about the Cornetto trilogy. They each have a strong libertarian/individualist undercurrent that is pretty easy to pick up on. It’s quite subtle in Shaun but by the climax of World’s End you’re getting hit over the head with it. They are far from mindless despite the action and often juvenile humor. There is quite a bit of sophistication in there as well if you are attuned to it.

Way to harsh our buzz, Professor!
Now we’ll never get off the island.

I haven’t seen ‘World’s End’, but examples of this sophistication? Like when Shaun & Co. are trying to get to the Winchester and they encounter an identical group?
Liz is pretty hot, huh? I love it when blondes dye their roots.

If it’s only that many times, chances are, it’s not that bad.

Video games nowadays are even worse, because most of them are pretty much movies, and even the gameplay is so dumbed down and simplified that the only thing making them adult or teen rated is the violent or racy content. That’s really it. If anything, with few exceptions, most electronic games simply aren’t worth it, unless someone wants to just play the older ones from the 1990s/early 2000s.

I will just say that with the exception of Spider-Man 3, the films by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) were simply decently entertaining movies. 3 was a disappointment in terms of substance, and mostly was just there to show off the special effects. But I would watch the first two ones with McGuire sooner than the two newer ones.
