He was big enough...6'2, 225-230. I was watching some baseball expert on the internet whose specialty was analyzing swings. Ruth came in at no. 1 in his estimation. Don't ask me how he made up his analysis.

Another little tidbit about Ruth. In 1920 Columbia University conducted some sort of test on the physical reaction capabilities of 500 male volunteers. All the males were in their physical primes, mostly in their twenties. Ruth was 25 at the time. Guess who came in no. 1 with the best reactions to a variety of tests?

I heard that story about Carl Yastrzemski. He was over 40 and he scored higher than any pro athlete or member of the military in all of New England in a test of (I believe) reflexes.

I wonder if that really happened.

My son said that his driver lost its zing but he won a new one at a church scramble tournament.

The Wall Street Journal conducted a small-scale test of the effect of new equipment on scores. The WSJ enlisted several club pros, and had them play the same course over several days using either a set of pre-1985 clubs (persimmon woods, steel shafts, blades) or a set of “modern” clubs (metal “woods”, graphite shafts, cavity-back irons). As I recall, there was a surprisingly small advantage with the modern clubs.
