The rise and fall of Subway: How the world’s biggest food chain lost its ‘fresh’ appeal
Financial Post ^ | June 3, 2015 | Drew Harwell

With 43,945 sandwich shops in 110 countries, Subway has become the world’s most ubiquitous restaurant chain, posting armies of “sandwich artists” in more American outposts than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined.

Yet at the dawn of its 50th birthday, all is not well in the land of Jared and jingles about $5 footlongs. Subway’s U.S. sales last year declined 3 per cent, or US$400 million, falling faster than any other of America’s top 25 food chains. The mega-deli was also knocked back to America’s third best-selling food chain for the first time in seven years.

Subway ascended over the last several decades on the back of broad American tastes, offering a healthy alternative for eaters leery of fast food, and at prices that made it unstoppable during the Great Recession. Even First Lady Michelle Obama praised Subway during a visit last year for “working to get kids excited about eating their vegetables.”

I don’t get the Jimmy Johns fascination...

I tired of mediocre sandwiches and now make my own on homemade bread to ‘oohs & ahhs’ of those that watch me assemble them at lunch.

It ain’t rocket science.

Memories, I remember when I could get a banging cheese steak, steak fries and 2 ltr soda (within the last 5 yrs) at Casa DeNapoli for a great price. Some how they were outside Washington High School and are no longer there. How can you not make a profit selling slices after school and the other business. From Texas, I am sad to see them go.
Sad thing is a cheese steak roll or hoagie roll (the same) is about the same size but Subway skims on the cheese, a half slice per 3” therefore 2 slices and the meat is tried to be folded up like it’s more than it is.
Listen, there’s a place in Philly, I’m not they are still around but if you need great lunchmeat and the same great rolls do it.

I hadn’t been to Subway since they had the 99 cent meatball sub deal some time ago. But last week I had to eat on the go to get to LA for a U2 concert so I ordered up a foot long Italian BMT, not bad. They are a bit weak on the meat and cheese, but I like veggies so you can pile those on and get a pretty filling meal for $6.75. What does chaps my hide is they charge you to toast the bun.

“I gave up Subway for Quiznos, then I discovered Jersey Mike’s”

Two of the Jersy Mikes have opened in my town, I haven’t tried them yet. They are a bit expensive but I guess it is a case of you get what you pay for.

Those that like a good chicken salad sandwhich I HIGHLY recommend the one that Arbys has. YES Arbys. They only sell it seasonally during the Summer which is stupid as I don’t care for their roast beef fare and wouldn’t go there otherwise.

The nearest one is 30 miles from me.

Must be a PITA to open a franchise.

Yes and amen to all that. But according to the article which triggered this discussion, Subway has slipped from First to Third in the sandwich franchise game. Now little ol’ Tommy Tucker didn’t cause that to happen all by his lonesome. There has to be a right smart group of people besides ME who have decided to go elsewhere for their sandwiches.
Blessings on your weekend.
