ollowing the exciting news that Windows will be free for everyone currently on Windows 7 or 8.1, providing they upgrade within the first year, users should also be aware of a few features that will no longer work with Windows 10 after that upgrade.

The features that will no longer work are taken from the official specifications page on Microsoft's Windows website, and reproduced below. The good news is that in some cases alternatives are available.

Okay - thank you. I was getting a bit concerned.

“I’m not going to install it - but just out of curiosity - is there any upside?”
Of course, better security. Also, no upgrade cost as long as you have it.

Not quite true.
Like a drug dealer, you get to download Windows 10 for "free." But after a year you must pay around $100 or more, depending on the version, to keep using it.

That's what I understand.

No. That has been debunked over and over.

MS has repeatedly said the updates are free for the lifetime of the device.

I have a One Drive folder in Windows Explorer. Also it was there in my Win8 machine that died. So how will one transfer files to One Drive folders?
I hope I get my bookmarks back. Oddly, they’re on my 8.1 phone, but I can’t create new folders.

.
As usual, the “upgrade” is really a huge downgrade.

Fools will be fools. (and there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch)

Yes but I’ve been told that I don’t have to install it if I decline even though I’m on the reserved list. They said it would automatically download but would it go ahead and install it?

Does anyone really know?

Trusting Microsoft’s word is like trusting Satan’s gospel.

I would clone the disk in pure self defense.

That’s what people here have been saying so I’ll have it done just in case.

Well, I've got the Technical Preview in a VM -- I have to get familiar with it for professional reasons, since I'll be supporting users running it. So far I haven't seen anything about it that is a significant improvement over Win7 for the things I do, and the UI is considerably less pleasant (though better than Win8). So for me, anyway, it looks like a downgrade I will avoid as long as I can. That looks like 2020 or so, when Win7 security patches stop.

If I had been running Win8 (or 8.1) I'd probably consider it an upgrade. But from Win7? Not really.

Alas, I can't help with that, not being familiar with One Drive, sorry. Maybe another FReeper will know. You might consider starting a vanity thread with the question, and if you do that, be sure to ping me to it so I can ping the Windows List for you.

Good luck!

I don’t want to bother everyone about it. I will wait, though, until I see a new machine running Windows 10 before jumping into it. Thanks.

Install Classic Shell,so you can banish Metro to hell and 8.1 will work just like Win7.

Classic Shel l also much improves W/10. Thank God.
