I am not affiliated with them, other than a very satisfied customer. There is a limited free trial you can access, but to get the full courses requires a paid subscription, valid for two years. If you don't pass, they refund your money.
Now, you don't *have* to use a study site like that, but the way they present it, it keeps track of your weak areas and reinforces it until you get it. It's not just running through the test questions either, they mix in the content, theory, math and additional links you can follow to delve as deep as you like into the subjects. I actually enjoyed the study, That stuff fascinates me (the sorcery and witchcraft of invisible radio waves).
I passed Novice and Technician back in the 1950s. Both expired while I was overseas with the Air Force. I got back into ham radio after I retired from the AF. Operated as a Technician for several years, then decided to go for Extra. Passed it at the Dayton Hamvention.
FWIW, the Advanced class license is no longer issued. However, those who had them can still operate on them, until they expire. My brother operates as and Advanced class holder. However, he'll eventually have to upgrade to Extra.
“...ARRL Field Day is the last weekend of this month...”
I do have a local club and they are setting up at the local county fairgrounds Friday afternoon for the weekend. I’m really hopeful to have my call by then.
The only thing that can spoil it is a work obligation that may keep me away for most of Saturday. But I’m planning on being out there as much as I can get away with!
.
Amazon has it on Kindle...and in regular books
Kindle edition 9.49...
Amazing.. I placed the order and by the time I figured out how to navigate my Cloud, it was there.
Back before I ‘knew better’ used to ‘berate’ the 80’s/early 90’s Navy Radiomen for not knowing code. A Retired RM ‘suggested’ I lay off because they could probably send out ‘a million (WELL a lot of) ‘messages’ while I was still adjusting my speed key.
Thank you — and I think they are just having some fun. They actually got me thinking of firing up the smoker sometime this week! Ha!
Thinking about it some more, smoking some meat, tending to the cooker for hours and working some contacts while you are at it seems like it may be a pretty good combination!
That could be a youtube channel!
“...Do you have to pass a CW test (Morse Code)?...”
No, not anymore. I think that’s good and bad. It opens the door a bit more to folks who might otherwise see morse as an insurmountable obstacle to the hobby; but it is also a needed skill for those times when morse is the only thing that can get through intelligibly...
>> what happened to the old TV channel frequencies when the HDTV standard went into effect? <<
Most of those channels are still allocated to TV. But some have been sold to cellular phone carriers. And there are plans now to switch even more frequencies to the cellular providers.
Hah...I was salivating, thinking I was going to hear about your new found skill of making bacon.
Interesting. Thanks for posting. Congratulations.
>> Transmitting watts cost $$, even on the low side (100 watts) <<
Sure. But a good antenna will normally give you “more bang for the buck” than will an increase in power — assuming you don’t live in an apartment or in a covenant-restricted neighborhood.
That is a thing of Beauty. Right up there with my lovely loaves of sourdough bread.
Congratulations!
I passed my tech and general in one sitting, but failed the extra. I take that on the 13th.
Congratulations!!

(I’m a little surprised there is no HAM group or ping list on FR. It’s an idea, since the only comms that will be up and running and providing news in certain circumstances is on Amateur bands.
That includes satellite comms as well.
Congratulations!
A suggestion ... Creating youtube videos in, ahem,
“Morse Speak”.
1. It would give the YT filters headaches.
2. It would give headaches to the uninitiated.
3. Once figured out, oops too late, it is already out there!
4. Or go back to a Cold War numbers set?
“...The best way to grasp that is that someone 5,000 miles away can see when I turn on a night light (approx 5 watts)...”
That’s is awesome!! 5 watts to Brazil!!
My first (relatively big) purchase is going to be an antenna analyzer as I want to “roll my own” from feedline to balun to antenna. At the moment, a Windom is looking good to me to get started. Thankfully, I have the room for at least 80m. Maybe, just maybe 160m (it’ll be close)...
Sounds like how I make my bean soup. I like to use the 15 bean mix too. Have been known to substitute bacon in a pinch.
Add congratulations are in order too.
Sounds like what I need. Thanks for the tip!
“...a good antenna will normally give you more bang for the buck than will an increase in power...”
Yes Sir - I’m with you 10,000%!
I’m currently in the market for an antenna analyzer for my first purchase as I want to roll my own from feedline to balun to antenna. I’m good to go with room for at least 80m. I may just be able to squeeze in something for 160m (it will be tight)...
