Word For The Day, Tuesday June 23, 2015

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

skookum [skoo-kuh m]

-adj, Northwest US, Canada
1. large; powerful; impressive.
2. excellent; first-rate.

[1825-35, Americanism; < Chinook Jargon: strong, powerful < Lower Chehalis (Salishan language of the Washington coast) sk wək wə́m ghost, spirit, monster (hence, apparently “fearsome” > “powerful” in Chinook Jargon)]

I like to have time to dry off from the shower before I am wet again.

going up to 97, but supposed to feel like 105 with the heat advisory. more storms predicted this afternoon too. I was en route to the hosp last week to see the baby and was on 66 when it was hailing and all kinds of wind. no damage to my vehicle but I was concerned about that!

Obama’s Iran Deal ain’t skookum
His hubris lets the mullahs just rook ‘im
By electing Ted Cruz
We’ll give Shiites the news
That if they don’t shape up, we might nuke ‘em

The Mequon Chinooks (a wooden bat league) plays at Concordia University here in the summer time and they supply a skookum evening of entertainment for the whole family. Much cheaper and less hassle than going downtown to see the Brewers.

Florida’s weather is far from any skookum ideal.

Wow, that sounds worse than our 83 degrees and 84% humidity!

Plus with the Chinooks you actually get to see baseball

I have window units in the house. Not a problem. It’s the stepping outside to get to the car that is a problem. Or the walk from the car to the office, really.

I use my car started and the ac is going before I exit the house on the bad days. Most days the AC is so cold that I welcome the heat of the car till the AC kicks in. The pool helps, too.

Absolutely! Just remember to wear a warm jacket and bring a blanket and seat cushion. The wind coming off of the Lake can be a little chilly!

But the food is good and cheap (compared to Miller Park) and the entertainment is constant.

We’ve been in VA for the past 10 days. People were complaining about the heat, but we thought it was heavenly. 79-80 degrees is so much friendlier than our usual 56-60 degrees. The AC indoors was brutal, however. I was constantly looking for a jacket.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/terrelle-pryor-moves-to-receiver—upsets-bengals—gets-picked-up-by-browns-210159503.html

Pryor finally gives up the QB dream, to try out with Browns for WR.

This might actually work.

It is 80, mostly cloudy and humid here-this is the first time it has not rained in days...

The trade deal is contentious
And the unions don’t like it-
Some on both sides have doubts
While others want to spike it

Over the net like a volleyball
With union leaders squealing
Of workers being all displaced
Curbing that double dealing

That they always indulge in
With that money paid in dues
Buying democrats skookum votes-
So why is this this even news?

Looks like a skookum would spook ‘em.
Can we send one to Congress?
