They told me in January that I needed to renew my membership but I checked my contract and it said my term didn't run out until October.

If you had renewed in January, for one year, your membership would have been extended until the following October.

That is NOT dishonest. You would receive one year’s membership upon paying for one year’s membership.

I receive the same mailings, and they do NOT tell you that you “need” to renew your membership. They offer you incentives to renew/extend your membership.
