When I was in high school, my brother had a cicada crawl in his ear while sleeping. Said it was horribly painful. He woke up the whole house with his screaming and poured rubbing alcohol straight into his ear to kill it because it was stomping all over his eardrum. Then he couldn’t remove it, so off to the ER. I slept with earplugs the rest of that summer.

That’s nothing. When I was a kid in Oklahoma, we carried Gila monsters around on our shoulders. They would clamp down on our ears and we just shrugged it off.
