When Sergeant Major Michael Jarnevic finally retires from the Army on July 8, it will be the end of a career that began in 1973 when he enlisted as a Marine and was deployed to Vietnam.

He is now nearing his 60th birthday and has spent three quarters of his life fighting for his country.

In fact, Sgt Major Jarnevic appears to be the last Vietnam veteran on active duty in the whole of the Army.

During his 42 years of service he has served in Honduras during the Contra wars in the 80s and Kuwait in the 90s during the Gulf War where he survived a chemical weapons attack.

He was also in Afghanistan after 9/11 and has been awarded 17 medals/ribbons, two badges and one Special tab.

Too bad his retirement pay is capped based on a maximum service length of 25 years. But, usually only flag officer are allowed to remain on active duty as long as he did. General Omar Bradley was still living on base till he died in his 90’s.

25 years? No, it’s 30 years. 75% base pay.

God bless and keep him in his well earned retirement and may he never ever have to go to a VA hospital.

One of my friends is a retired Command Sargent Major, with 30 years service and two wars fought, with beaucoup scalps on his lodge pole. From my perspective... one does not stop being a Sargent Major. Impossible. Too damned ingrained. I reached the rank of Specialist Four. It is an interesting relationship between the two of us. Rare is the day that I refer to him by his given name.

Well done good and faithful servant- Sargent Major Jarnevic.

What’s all that churned up in the wake of the USS Ranger?

It looks like chocolate. What’s the statute of limitations on environmental crimes?

Nice to see the British Press recognize the Sgt Major.

Now he is a true example of when I went in the Military homosexual acts were outlawed, then it became ‘Don’t ask, Don’t tell’, now we are sliding down the slippery slope of ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, you better join ‘em’.

Definitely a long slide down the ‘razor blade of life’.

“During his 42 years of service he has served in Honduras during the Contra wars in the 80s and Kuwait in the 90s during the Gulf War where he survived a chemical weapons attack.”

But... Wait!!! Everyone knows Saddam did not have any weapons of mass destruction!!!

Therefore he could not have survived a chemical weapons attack! /S
