Maybe others have already used this but we are ruled by the New York/Washington axis. New York is the financial/media center and Washington is the center of government.
When I was growing up right across the Potomac from DC, New York seemed to be the more important of the two cities. Washington seemed to be considered less important despite being the center of government. Maybe that was due to the networks being centered in NYC.
