Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John [Sodomite Coming Out Song]

Philadelphia Freedom
By Elton John

I used to be a rolling stone you know
If a cause was right
I'd leave to find the answer on the road
I used to be a heart beating for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say the more my work gets done

'Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I've waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee high to a man, yeah
Gave me a piece of mama, daddy never had

[Chorus]
Oh Philadelphia freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won't you shine the light
Philadelphia freedom, I love-ve-ve you, yes I do

If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city (some people the city)
Some others choose the good old family home (some others choose a good old...)
I like living easy without family ties (living easy)
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

'Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I've waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee high to a man
Mmm, gave me a piece of mama, daddy never had

Oh Philadelphia freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won't you shine the light
Philadelphia freedom, I love-ve-ve you, yes I do

All I did was copy the lyrics from the site. However, it is the other parts of the song that are more obvious.

If they got that first lyric wrong, why would you think the later ones weren't botched also?

Any time I research song lyrics, I always check multiple sites for a 'consensus'.

“He says he is also attracted to women”

Well then, Sir E John is merely a bit confused about his sexual preferences.
We should forgive his having simulated sex with young male strippers dressed as 9 year old cub scouts.
And his keeping Scotland Yard’s busy coping with his boy groping in the 80’s.
He sure does know how to entertain us and his “guests”...

He’s a great headliner act in our remake of Sodom & Gomorrah.

Wow, where to begin with this.
It is rare to see such unbridled ignorance on FR. (Ignorance is lack of knowledge, not stupidity.)
Anyone who has read my posts, knows that I post frequently on Rock, and Pop related articles because it’s a hobby of mine. I own 2000 plus albums/CD’s, and store music trivia like a file cabinet.

Here are the things you got wrong in this post.

1) Elton John wrote the song “Philadelphia Freedom” about being gay.
Wrong: Elton is homosexual, we all know that, but this song was written to honor Billy Jean King’s (who’s also homosexual) Tennis Team of the same name. The song was co-written By Bernie Taupin (one of the few songs that Elton helped write lyrics to) who is not homosexual. According to both parties, they have never even been in the room when writing any of Elton’s songs. Bernie writes the lyrics 95% of the time, Elton puts them to music. They are one of the most successful writing duo’s since Lennon and McCartney.

Elton has spoken about the origins of this song many times because most people believe it’s about America’s Bicentennial.
Elton has been openly homosexual since the early eighties. If he and Bernie had written a song about “coming out” why would he lie repeatedly about it?

2) The lyrics refer to a man between knees or what ever you posted.
Wrong. Here are the accurate lyrics;

“Philadelphia Freedom”

I used to be a rolling stone
You know if the cause was right
I’d leave to find the answer on the road
I used to be a heart beating for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say the more my work gets done

`Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man
Yeah gave me peace of mind my daddy never had

Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won’t you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do

If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city
Some others choose the good old family home
I like living easy without family ties
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

If you are referring to this line:
“Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man”
It refers to “Philadelphia Freedom affecting him as a child”, which is why most fans believed it was a pro-America patriotic song.
Elton has said, and shown (see his concerts after 911) that he does love the US, the song was not about that.

A Christian Pastor in Los Angeles (Joe Schimmel, Fight the Good Fight Ministries)

He may be a good pastor, but do you not see the irony that his ministry is named after a 1981 song by a Rock group named Triumph.
In the 50’s it was Elvis, in the 60’s it was John Lennon, in the 70’s it was Alice Cooper, in the 80’s it was Ozzy Osbourne, Next was Marilyn Manson, There were claims of satanic messages by playing the “vinyl” albums “backwards”, but only millionaire TV preachers had $900 turntables that would play records backwards. I’ve heard crap like this my whole life, and still have seen no evidence, of brain washing in popular music.
For example, read the lyrics to this song, and tell what you think:

Shout at the Devil
By Mötley Crüe

He’s the wolf screaming lonely in the night
He’s the blood stain the stage
He’s the tear in your eye
Been tempted by his lie
He’s the knife in your back
He’s rage
He’s the razor to the knife
Oh lonely is our lives
My heads spinnin’ round and round
But in seasons of wither
We’ll stand and deliver
Be strong and laugh and

[Chorus]
Shout shout shout
Shout at the devil

He’ll be the love in your eyes
He’ll be the blood between your thighs
And then have you cry for more
He’ll put your strength to the test
He’ll put the thrill back in death
Sure you’ve heard it all before
He’ll be the risk in the kiss
Might be anger on your lips
Might run scared for the door
But in seasons of wither
We’ll stand and deliver
Be strong and laugh and

[Chorus]

I’ll bet you and your preacher would say it’s about devil worship. Better re-read it, according to author Nikki Sixx it’s an anti-evil statement.

You can find evil everywhere if you look hard enough for it. If you want to gripe about an Elton/Bernie song about homosexuality, go look up the lyrics to “All the Young Girls Love Alice” from the “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” album (one of the best albums ever). You might have a point for argument with that song.

I respectfully disagree, even though I am being accused of ignorance. Yes, everyone knows the story that Taupin wrote the song and it is about Billy Jean King. Clearly, that is not the case, unless your into post-modern deconstruction. It is not only this song...Many of his songs have some twisted homosexual double entendre; Nikita, Your Song, Etc.

Remember, I said the word ignorance was used for lack of knowledge.
Unfortunately, you are demonstrating your lack of knowledge again.
Did you read my whole post? This is not a story, this is a first hand account of comments made by Elton John (Reginald Dwight), and Bernie Taupin. First, this song is one of the few that the lyrics were co-written by Elton, and Bernie The 2 songs lyrics you mention (”Nikita”, a female name with Russian history, and “Your Song” which was written by Bernie before he ever met Elton) were completely written by Bernie Taupin. He is not homosexual. He does not consult Elton about lyrics, and Elton does not consult Bernie regarding the musical composition, 90% of the time.

Your contention of double entendre is a result of the ambiguity written into the lyrics. Many could be sung by a woman or a man, but because you know Elton is a homosexual you are projecting that onto the song. It’s hard to scrub that out of the brain. However, I could sing 90% of Elton’s songs to my wife as “love songs”. If you read the words they work that way because Bernie is a genius.

Again I say give me a reason Elton has lied, in concert, to his fans, so many times when we all know he’s homosexual.
Your allegation makes no sense. If he were still “in the closet” your allegation might hold water. Your are arguing your opinion against facts stated by the writers of the song.

Did you even read the correct lyrics I posted?
Where in the world do you get “post-modern destruction”?

Jan, I side with your concern and point of view.
I get the gist, lyric detail quibbling, aside.
I will admit, I really like all music and once had a huge music collection when I was a kid.
I always was fascinated with how creative rock n roll was.
It stirs you.
But something always made me listen to the lyrics, and I knew more often than not, it was subversive, and irrationally anti-authority (even god’s good authority).

*Almost all rock stars are irrationally liberal, because their craft requires them to fixate and promote teen angst / lust. The stuff of slick Willy’s 60’s counterculture, and the current gimme dat low information voter that feels, rather than thinks.

Pop star actors are largely experts at provoking emotion with music, lyric and gyrating performance.
The sin is that they are worshiped.

Of the mind that more often then not, Rock n Roll / pop music has been a very bad cultural influence sixty years since its inception.
We allowed record companies to replace real cultural heritage folk songs with top forty pop hit novelty.
We have little meaningful common culture, unlike countries one tenth our size.
And it gets more outrageously indecent, and meaningless, year by year.
Life imitates art.

Hold me closer, Tony Danza

I left my brains down in Africa

There’s a bathroom on the right

See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen

I'll never leave your pizza burning

Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche, another rubber in the night

Those poor beautiful kids...
Certain that Sir John will raise them free from his homosexual bias, and avoid exposing the boys to the fun male strippers dressed as cub scout parties he and his sick ilk frequented.
Wouldn’t be surprised to learn later, that this same sex couple’s sons, were not elated, to be felated.

“they took me along to meeting places in the LGBT communities. I was exposed to overt sexual activities like sodomy, nudity, pornography, group sex, sadomasochism and the ilk.”

“There was no guarantee that any of my Dad’s partners would be around for long, and yet I often had to obey them,” she said. “My rights and innocence were violated.”

“As children, we are not allowed to express our disagreement, pain and confusion,” Stefanowicz explained. “Most adult children from gay households do not feel safe or free to publicly express their stories and life-long challenges; they fear losing professional licenses, not obtaining employment in their chosen field, being cut off from some family members or losing whatever relationship they have with their gay parent(s). Some gay parents have threatened to leave no inheritance, if the children don’t accept their parent’s partner du jour.”

“I grew up with a parent and her partner[s] in an atmosphere in which gay ideology was used as a tool of repression, retribution and abuse,”
