A fresh Start: Microsoft's Windows 10 wins plaudits from early users

Microsoft Corp's launch of its first new operating system in almost three years, designed to work across laptops, desktop and smartphones, won mostly positive reviews for its user-friendly and feature-packed interface.

The launch was seen critical for the company, particularly after the poor response to Windows 8, an ambitious redesign that confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout.

The new OS, launched on Wednesday, will be available as a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.

Wall Street Journal's Geoffrey Fowler said Windows 10 fixes most of the issues with Windows 8 and improves on Windows 7, Microsoft's most popular OS in recent years.

For one, the start button is back.

"Three months of testing Windows 10 determined that this familiar yet fresh overhaul far outweighs any problems," Fowler wrote in his review.

By offering free upgrades, Microsoft aims to put the system on as many devices as possible. The company would then make up for any lost revenue by selling services such as Office over the Internet, or cloud.

FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives said the cloud strategy could generate a new revenue stream.

"It's a step in the right direction. They went back to their core DNA around software and a cloud-centric model and ultimately Windows as a service, a subscription model," Ives told Reuters.

Microsoft, which unveiled Windows 10 in September, skipped Windows 9 altogether, to put some distance between the new system and Windows 8.

Couple minor issues:

Had to change my SSID to quit sharing my wifi with those it deems are “friends”.

Edge only works with unacceptable levels (for me) of UAC.

Did you change the SSID before or after updating? I am upgrading from 8.1.

Thanks

After in my case. Before is better. _optout_nomap at the end takes you out of this program and the Google network mapping one.

I just switched to Windows 10 this morning ...so far so good. I loved Windows 7 and thankfully didn’t convert to the abomination of Windows 8. A few minor glitches, but everything else seems to be working fine.

"Thank you Microsoft, may I have another?"

Just wait until they make 11 a subscription based service...then we will all go begging...

IIRC sharing wifi is Off in W10 by default. It was addressed on Windows Weekly near the end but I had to cook dinner for mrs p6. I’ll check when they post the podcast.

At first I was sure that had to be photoshopped. But then, no, that’s quite possibly Microsoft’s best effort at user friendly error message.

I'm really a Mac guy but have using a laptop with Windows 7 for a little over a year now. Upgraded to Windows 10 last night.

All went smoothly except for a brief scare where I lost all sound after the upgrade despite the speakers being set at 100%. A quick restart and I got my sound back.

So far I like it. All my old apps seem to be working including an old Adobe Photoshop CS2. Looks like Microsoft Essentials is gone and replaced by Defender. I'll have see if Malwarebytes and Defender play nice together. May have to change some settings in Malwarebytes if they dont.

Things seem to be working a bit faster too.
