(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

“After measuring the amount of carbon dioxide in samples from nearly 200 locations across the desert and comparing them to the carbon dioxide in melt water, they were able to calculate how much water had flowed into the basin.”
I’m not sure they even found any groundwater yet. It sounds like they are measuring CO2 levels at the surface or in the sand? And then explaining the results by “there must be a vast amount of water below.”
The photo of those guys digging - if groundwater was so shallow they could get to it by digging - the place wouldn’t be a desert.

It’s not uncommon for salt water to be found way underground. The oil wells up here pump a mix of crude oil and salt water. Then the salt water is pumped right back where it came from.

I was confused as later in the article it said it was “melt water” from the mountains.

It’s a common known fact by most geolists that water cannot leave the planet. All the water that has always been here....can never leave here. That goes for all other elements too. Expect for whatever the space aliens stole from us.
There may be droughts and overpopulation but that water is still here! Think about it and you will get it.

"Just like food production, water scarcity is political, not natural."
That's well said and very correct. The following keyphrases should yield some interesting knowledge about remedies.
"artificial scarcity" "open source equipment"
