Lynn Anderson, singer of 'Rose Garden,' dies in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Lynn Anderson, whose strong, husky voice carried her to the top of the charts with "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden," has died. She was 67.

A statement from the family said she passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday. Her publicist said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

Anderson first soaked up the national spotlight as a young singer on "The Lawrence Welk Show" between 1967 and 1969. Although she was signed to an independent label, the exposure helped her nab a deal with Columbia Records in Nashville.

"He was absolutely wholesome," she said of Welk in a 1987 interview with The Associated Press. "He felt country music was coming into its own and deserved to be on national TV. At that time, I was the only one singing country music on national TV every week. He's one of my heroes and always will be."

Thanks! I had an alto range (more tenor, now, haha) as a kid and LOVED her voice!

Lawrence Welk will always have this (strange) soft spot in my heart. My grandma used to watch me on Saturday nights (I think Saturday), and she would watch Lawrence Welk. As a kid , I couldn't stand it. Now it warms my heart.

67? She is only twelve years older than me. Just a kid.

That woman was a beauty in the 60’s and 70’s. Natural beauty.
Hard living caught up to her later and took its toll.
Truly a singer not a auto tune sound.

I remember seeing a story a few years ago in which she was arrrested for DWI or public drunkeness or something. I was shocked that someone who was such a beautiful young woman had become such a trailer trash type. However, she rebounded from that and seemed to be back on track again. Sad to hear that she has passed. RIP.

I used to listen to that song when I was a boy. Then the song became associated with politicians making false promises.

She should never have gone to Italy.

Same with me. My parents would switch on LW......and I would leave the room. Now, I actually enjoy it as it was such a simpler time and place in our country. I miss it dearly. Now it’s gone.

Another great alto I used to belt out in the shower was ‘Delta Dawn’ by Tanya Tucker.

Lawrence Welk will always have this (strange) soft spot in my heart”

You are just a mere baby. Lawrence Welk was one of two TV programs my parents would permit us to watch when I was a teen. Very religious household and although dancing wasn’t permitted she loved to watch the couple that danced on his show each week (Bobby and ???). The only other show we watched was on Sunday night after church - Amos and Andy. Interesting combination.

Lynn Anderson and Rose Garden brings back lots of memories from my growing up years.
