Agreed. I always felt the movie was meant to be a thank you and goodbye from Wayne to his fans. Loved seeing Richard Boone in it, too.

He deserved it. Only a coward shoots people in the back unless it is something like a Ned Pepper situation in True Grit where necessary to save a life.

John Wayne didn’t die for 3 years after this movie. He was still going strong after the movie was made.

Slowly dying of cancer is not the same as going strong. I'm glad he had three more years, but he stopped filming for a reason.

Even George Burns had cameo roles after he retired.
