WASHINGTON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday will officially restore Denali as the name of North America's tallest mountain, ending a 40-year battle over what to call the peak that has been known as Mount McKinley.

I’ve always thought that Mt. McKinley was just an honorary name. I only heard it rarely used since the early 90s.

I guess I don't get around. Mt McKinley is all I have ever heard.

So the president can arbitrarily change the name of places? Cool. The more Caesarism, the better. No consulting with Congress. Rule by decree.

Not really ridiculous at all.
Because:
that is what Alaskans call it.
That was the name of it before.
Previous Alaska governors have asked for the change.
The law allows it.
Only politicians from Ohio have registered a complaint.
People from Ohio shouldn’t be in charge of what Alaska calls their mountain.
It was named McKinley for political reasons after he was nominated. Not because he was president, not because he was assassinated, and not because he ever visited.

Good post. But what I object to is one man doing this all on his own (even if the law does allow it). As I noted in an earlier post, that's a form of Caesarism.

Why is this 0bama's decision, without approval from Congress?

I'm surprised he didn't rename it 'Mt. ISIS'.

What’s next? Changing the name of Washington to Sharptonberg?

You joke, but eventually, they will go after everything "Washington" because he was a slaveholder. That's why I say, once they get rid of "Redskins" they will go after the "Washington."

The 1947 law which created the U.S. Board of Geographic Names gives it the authority to make such changes. This really isn’t that unprecedented.

No, it was named that by a gold prospector when McKinley was nominated.

Not when he was president. Not after. Before. Not to honor his service after he was assassinated. Before, for political reasons.

The only ones with their nose in a twist are people from Ohio.

Alaskans call it Denali and have asked to change it back for decades.

If Ohio wants a Mount McKinley, they should get their own.

It only would be “Caesarism” if Obama changed it to be named after himself.

Again, no. Alaska asks, Ohio blocks, and ends up controlling the name in a non-Ohio state where Alaskans call it Denali.

The law allows the Secretary of the Interior to act if the action isn’t voted on in a timely manner. Congress is out of session, so she acted and Obama approved.

Ohio wants a Mount McKinley? Let Ohio build one.

One state should never be in charge of another state’s natural resources. It is that simple.

Actually Al

They been talking about this for years

I remember hearing back in early 1990s they thinking about change the name back to Denali I don’t see no harm in it

Lot of Alaskans told me they still called by “Alaskan native” name

That argument has great merit. But this is a case of the Federal government, not Alaska, making the name change. Most Alaskans might agree with the name change, but they are essentially bystanders in the whole process.

If your reading of the law is correct (and I have no reason to doubt you), Obama just as easily could have named the site Mt. Michelle.
