Here is a word with some very specific application. There are some who may not be said to be diffident, like the Trump. Others have an air of diffidence, yet a quiet confidence, like the good Dr. Carson. While others cannot speak without all the words written for them, like you know who.

Ugh. Beer.

(But, after midnight, what is the real diffidence between coffee and beer?)

This is a word I always get wrong. I just have a different meaning for it in my head.

I always think it means: standoffish, due to not caring.

You can’t be diffident if you are going to “get in before the ping” when Louis Foxwell is posting WFTD.

I've made that same mistake, confusing "diffident" with "indifferent."

The horrible Benghazi incident
Should have left Hillary quietly diffident
But when searching her soul
All she found—a black hole
In denial, mendacious and confident

For years voters have been diffident
Not using their power, not confident.
Trump's come along
singing a new song
Causing a bit of a scintillant.
