The story is that the alarm sounded and you are right the 9volt does not keep time, so he must have plugged it in.

I have had a number of similar Micronta clocks with battery backup.

You are correct that the clock running on backup does not display the time but the alarm does sound (which mean you could detonate a bomb with the clock).

Well if the alarm still works, then the story is very likely true.

So why would someone set the alarm to go off in class?

Oh ok, nice to know because I read that it memorized the time but did not sound an alarm. There was no battery in it in the photo but perhaps it could have been taken out by the police before they photographed it.
