Apparently, while we weren't looking, women's softcore porn has shacked-up with scifi. Are real men that disappointing?

Immaterial. Women that buy that sort of crap have expectations that are way too high.

I write sci-fi and it is disconcerting to see around a quarter of the top 100 books in the genre have covers of shirtless men. But erotica has seeped into every genre and women buy those books by the ton.

Sex has been a sci-fi subject for as long as I can remember...(1950s)....

I would imagine that it will continue...to be so.

Just don’t look at the first page, Amazon breaks down sci-fi into a like two dozen categories.

I too write science fiction. I suspect this scifi/erotica is more fantasy than science fiction. However, I'm not going to read any to find out.

“...A Paranormal Shifter Romance...”
****************************************************************************
If I were single, I would stay away from dating attractive female Shape Shifters. I’d be afraid that I would find out that their name was Caitlin ... way too late.

Really, what is going on is that Amazon is now selling self-published ebooks alongside regular titles.

That junk has been up on the ebook sites for a long time. There is a lot that is even weirder and grosser too, (like bestiality romance stuff), so consider yourself lucky you just browsed scifi!

There are jokes that romance novels are porn for women.
Since you already have whole categories of shape-shifters (including dinosaurs) having sex with male and female humans after all the other supernatural creatures were tapped out, including werewolves, the sci-fi genre is one of the few left.

“Are real men that disappointing?”

FWIW, a few weeks back.. there was a thread on FR about female robots. A LOT of male freepers were all for the idea (they don’t talk back, can be programmed to keep silent etc). I guess the knife cuts both ways... possibly a lot of folks out there who couldn’t find or keep a good one and explore wild ideas like a robot mate or an alien lover?

Maybe there is something to all of the space-alien abductions.

The general name for the sub-genre is Paranormal Romance. Been around a long time. And Romance has been the #1 selling genre since the 80s, so apparently men have been disappointing for a very long time.

Alien romance. Maybe it’s illegal alien rape romance fantasy from Bernie Sanders.
