The California Highway Patrol is trying to find the person who dumped hundreds of nails and tacks on a road near Woodside thats popular among cyclists.
Officers said Monday that there were so many nails left on Kings Mountain Road that clean-up crews were forced to sweep the lanes to get them out of the way.
Cyclists are usually drawn to the road for its views and 1,500-foot climb to Skyline Boulevard. "This is one of my favorite hill climbs," Michael Shorts said.
But riders, who are now being warned to pay close attention to the sidewalks, are afraid they are being targeted. "Its really frightening to be honest," Grace Chuchla said.
Chuchla and her teammates on the Stanford cycling team have seen pictures on Facebook that show dozens of nails that were scattered near the summit on Kings Mountain Road and Skyline Boulevard.
"Youre on a 20 lb. bike with a 23-millimeter wide tire," she said. "If it hits a tack, and your tire blows, youre going to hit the pavement and its going to hurt."
CHP officers said that two weeks ago about 20 riders had to replace their tires after rolling over nails. No one was injured and investigators are asking for help to find the person responsible.
"Think about your own kids riding a cycle ... and getting a concussion or worse," Ken Doub said.
Many cyclists and drivers suspect that whoever is behind these incidents doesnt want to share the country road.
"Im sure some of the neighbors dont like all the traffic," Maoz Friedman said. "It sucks they would go that far to discourage people from coming up." A cyclist team is raising money to offer a reward for information that could lead to an arrest. So far, theyve raised about $5,000 for their cause.
Perhaps you should spend your energies pedaling just a little faster so you are less of an inconvenience to cars.
While you are at it, practice a bit more on riding on the right edge of the road so that when I’m texting and driving while lighting my cigarette and clutching the beer between my knees I’ll have less of a chance of clipping you and knocking you into the alligator infested ditch.
You seem testy. Is your spandex a little too tight.
Thank you for proving to everyone, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that cyclists are total douchebags.
You strap your feet into the pedals of your veganmobile which you admit you are unable to control and you call drivers douchebags?
Typical cyclist here.
This runner is stealing that!
Stuff it.
I'm both a careful auto driver and a cyclist. I despise the many (but certainly not all) cyclists who ignore the traffic laws and drive erratically. It is impossible to share the road safely with cyclists who ignore the laws and ride in unpredictable ways. Yesterday I nearly hit a cyclist who decided to veer from the sidewalk into the street without a glance at traffic.
I can't remember the last time I've seen a cyclist give a hand signal. (In fairness, there is no hand signal for "I'm about to cut in front of your car.")
I wonder how cyclists would feel if a group of pedestrians blocked the road they were attempting to travel?
Pray America wakes
Maybe you should read the law on where you are allowed to begin and end a right turn. But then you probably suck at driving too.
It is the shame that the 90% of cyclists who are douchebags make the 10% like you who are not look bad.
Irrational hatred of spandex clad sissy douche bags? Oh hell no, that hatred is well earned by the shwinn pushing sissies. Can't blam anyone who hates the dicks, at all.
That sounds like the incident was 100% your own damn fault.
I’ve yelled at them riding 3 across while cars wait behind them. They think they are saving the earth and cars should bow down.
“Think about your own kids riding a cycle “
How many kids ride on this road?
Perhaps it would be wiser for bicyclists to not use those pedal straps on a street they share with cars.
Keep your sissy schwinn out of my way and I won't flick a marlboro butt at your spandex clad head, road hog.
At 10 o’clock in the morning? Get what I meant now?
Yes. Let's murder cyclists who annoy you and get in your way by crushing them with your car.
Thank goodness I bike offroad trails too narrow and rugged to be passable by cars driven by you.
I don’t smoke, not overweight and am not a bottom feeder. I hate the bike Nazi’s (Whoop there it is). You F’in douches don’t share the road. Most of my commute is on a two lane road with NO shoulders, very curvy and a 45 mph speed limit. I come across bike douches riding three wide all the time. Sometimes even on the wrong side of the road. So who is following the law?
Sounds like you could have slowed down a bit to avoid the problem.
When someone else is being a a*****e, does that mean you have to be an a*****e as well?
Road rage: they hate bicyclists, they hate motorcyclists who weave through traffic, they hate big trucks, they hate those with bumper stickers with which they don’t agree, they hate. Why be in such a rush to go to hell (hating your neighbor is mortal sin) ? Taking away driving privileges (driving is a privilege, not a right) is a reasonable recourse for those who act out their irrational hatred on the roadways.
