With the Surface Book Laptop/Tablet hybrid, Microsoft is taking the game to Apple
The Guardian ^ | 10/07/2015

Microsoft did something shocking last night. It launched something people might actually lust over, something sleek, something powerful, something innovative. The Surface Book.

At an event in New York rammed with press and industry types and live-streamed to the world, Microsoft confidently and defiantly unveiled its grand vision of Windows 10 devices.

Some of the products the company unveiled were expected: an updated Surface Pro 4 tablet, the second generation of the company’s Microsoft Band fitness tracker and two new Lumia smartphones. But it was the Surface Book, Microsoft’s first laptop and a big bet for the company, that drew the Apple-like whoops, gasps and applause.

The Surface Book stole the hearts and headlines of the tech press, but what was most striking from Microsoft’s presentation was the confidence and exuberance with which it all played out.

The Guardian loves it.
Which means it can’t have a chance, given their unfailing ability to pick the losers in economics, politics, etc.
Although, to this Apple guy driven from Microsoft years ago due to their complete inability to get things right, it appears to be a good thing.
Given Apple’s quest to start screwing things up like Microsoft used to do, perhaps there is a chance for success.

As an Apple user, I was pretty impressed and will check it out more.

I did away with desktops 10 years ago and have been using laptops ever since. But now I find toting laptops around rather cumbersome, especially as I commute to Manhattan each day by train. I would love to switch to a tablet full time. I have the latest iPad and have tried taking it to work a few times and leaving the laptop home but it doesn't quite do the job.

I went looking for specs last night at the Surface Book web site and couldn’t find any.

I will never buy another Windows computer. I bought a Mac laptop and the time it’s saved me fighting viruses alone is worth the price.

Normally, I would agree with you, but this isn’t limited to the Guardian.

Even non-political and tech oriented sites are convinced that this is a legitimate competitor to the Mac Book Pro.

See here for instance:

and here:

and here:

http://www.wegotserved.com/2015/10/06/microsoft-wrestles-innovation-crown-from-apple-with-the-surface-book/

Just for starters.

Personally, I am a tech agnostic. I don’t support companies, I support PRODUCTS. Give me something that meets my needs and I’ll support you.

That’s what competition is all about.

You want a premium machine, you pay a premium price. And based on initial impressions, this new Microsoft computer is a premium machine.

For all of the whining about Apple being overpriced, they’re actually well within the range of prices of similarly-powered computers, they just don’t sell the low-end stuff.

They are out there, 5 models. The specs still lack some details. For $2,600 I want details first.

Apple is the big threat to Apple and it shows. The me-too engineers at Apple are really playing small ball. They are so wrapped up in their Eco-System mantra they let MS slay them on Skylake.

The Apple Ring? I’m waiting for line of underwear that sniffs farts and gives you dietary advice.

The new phone is pretty funny though, water cooled? That takes ethnic engineering to a whole nubba lebel.
