IF you appeal, then you can play and any suspension will be served in the future after you have been declared guilty.

It’s a tactic.

I know why a player would appeal a suspension like that, but unless he's really confident that the suspension is going to be overturned then it really makes no sense to appeal a two-game suspension when you're already sitting out one game for other reasons.

It's not much different than a guy who gets suspended for five games just before he goes on the 15-day disabled list. Why would you appeal the suspension if you're going to be out for fifteen days anyway, and run the risk of having your suspension appeal hearing scheduled right after you get back into the lineup?
