“Progressive Rock” even the name sounds wrong.

Rock without Blues is just bland pop.

Yeah. King Crimson, Yes, Donnie Osmond they are all the same.
I rather enjoy ELP in their "classical" mode.

It’s funny how I love Chick Corea and the original ‘Return to Forever’ stuff but never liked ELP at all.

Before you give me any grief for saying so.... I am a lifetime, pro musician who plays 5 instruments well so I’m qualified to give my opinion I would think.

One of my favorite groups. Though I liked Karn Evil 9 better than anything on Works either volume.

Love Beach - don’t mention it

I’ve yet to find any ELP tunes that come close to these two.

I remember listening to this side of my cassette tape when my mom walked into the room. She exclaimed “Well - your taste in music has certainly improved!”

“Oh wait mom. Here is the other side of the tape - same band.” It came up with one of the loud drum passages of Carl Palmer iirc. She just shook her head.

Funny - I was just complaining (jokingly) about the “music” my daughter was listening to.

ELP is still one of the few bands that I can listen to for any length of time. RUSH is my staple though!

The part of the 70s I hated. Castrada singing with new age instruments (is that a theramin?)

ELP, ELO, never cared for them. Never cared for those ‘college’ bands either like Doobie and Steely Dan.

In the decade of the 70s, for me it was:

Zeppelin Stones Who. The Band, Cream,Creedence, ZZ (and a bunch of other southern rock like skynard and Allmans), heck even the Dead played bluesy. Aerosmith, (the Beatles though they were gone but not forgotten in The 70s).

I saw RTF in Cincy with the GREAT Stanley Clarke on bass and the late Joe Farrell on sax during their “Romantic Warrior” tour. GREAT show.

I had tickets to see Joe Zawinul in a solo show at our local jazz club but it was cancelled on day of the show. Shortly afterwards, I read of his passing. He would have been great to see & hear...especially in an intimate night club setting.

Not big on ELO do like Steely Dan. Not big on the Stones but agree with the rest of your like list. A big one missing for me is Santana. And I never missed a Kinks concert. They put on a great show.

Should have just titled the thread "Keith Emerson - Piano Concerto No. 1" The piece is not by ELP. It stands on its own as an example of 20th Century orchestral music. In that context it is a work based on a tone row which incorporates a rock and roll style here and there, but it is no more "Rock & Roll" than Gershwin's own Concerto is "Jazz".

That latter kept writing and developing his serious output, but tragically died too young. Emerson, sadly, just moved to Salt Cay and got drunk for a few decades. Too bad. He had synthesized the influences of Bartok, Ginanstera, Rock and Jazz into an utterly unique compositional "voice". It is a rare thing to hear a bar of music and know instantly the composer. Bach's music has this quality, Chopin, Brahms, Debussy...

Song writing wasn't Emerson's strength. Most of the hits were Greg Lake's, but the song "Trilogy" stands out as a rare Keithism. No, Keith was and is primarily and instrumentalist. Mr. Emerson is still alive, but his output died decades ago. Truly sad.

Big Kinks fan......saw most groups in the 70s I liked. Never saw the Kinks.
Saw Cream, Stones (3 times), Zeppelin, Who, The Band, Airplane, Byrds, Zappa, Dead (quite a few times...liked their countrified stuff), . Wish I had seen the Kinks. But as Ray and Dave don’t seem to be on the best terms, it might never happen again. I like Santana. Saw many acts at yasgur ‘s farm in August 69. And Newport Jazz festival also in 69.
Went to the Fillmore East most Friday nights 68, 69, 70. Interesting times. (”May you live in Interesting times” ancient Chinese Curse)

I have everything on a USB drive plugged into my car’s sound system.

I always thought the soundtrack he did for the movie "Inferno" would serve as a decent basis for a 2nd movement were he to compose a 2nd Concerto.
